The gathering

What to look forward to

Google Senior Research Scientist and University of London Institute of Philosophy Fellow Winnie Street will examine whether folk-psychological explanations of AI behavior point to genuine AI minds, followed by Q&A and networking. Her work bridges philosophy and empirical research on AI cognition, consciousness, moral status, ethics, and safety.

Inside the event

🧠 Sentio
Sentio is building the digital minds field in London & beyond. We host the Sentio Series - fortnightly London events that combine a talk, Q&A, and networking. Talks explore empirical, governance and moral questions in areas such as AI consciousness, sentience, agency, and welfare. A home for those working on or interested in digital minds to gather regularly.

🎙️ Overview
When people interact with AI chatbots, they often get the impression that the character they're talking to is a minded entity. Is this phenomenon best understood as mere anthropomorphic projection, or could our folk psychological attributions indicate genuine mindedness?

Winnie will examine the philosophical significance of being able to predict and explain AI behaviour using folk psychological concepts like beliefs, desires, and intentions to build a case for an interpretationist realism about AI minds.

Followed by Q&A and (in-person) networking, with vegan pizza and drinks included. Whether you work in digital minds, are considering it, or are curious from a related field like AI safety, come along!

👤 Speaker
Winnie Street is a Senior Research Scientist on the Paradigms of Intelligence team at Google, and a Fellow at the Institute of Philosophy at the University of London. Her research combines philosophical and empirical approaches to questions of AI cognition, consciousness and moral status, and their implications for AI ethics and safety. This year Winnie co-authored the book 'Emerging Questions in AI Welfare' with her Google colleague Geoff Keeling.
