What to look forward to
This interactive conversation will examine whether generative AI challenges creativity as a uniquely human trait, drawing on philosophical thought experiments and the history of creativity and technology. Facilitator Emma Stamm, PhD in Interdisciplinary Studies and Co-Founder and Executive Director of The Lenox Institute for Advanced Study, will guide an open exchange among creatives, researchers, builders, and curious thinkers.
Inside the event
The concept of creativity has a surprisingly short history. While ancient philosophers expounded on imagination and free will, theorizations of creativity as a distinct trait only date to the past hundred years. GenAI suggests that creativity is not unique to humans or even conscious organisms, but is reducible to mere calculation and programming. Has creativity finally been revealed as a sham? This week's interactive community conversation explores thought experiments that embody the philosophical issues raised by genAI tools; how scholars and artists have framed the relationship between creativity and technology; was creativity always a myth, and if so, is this a problem? OUR FACILITATOR Emma Stamm is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of The Lenox Institute for Advanced Study. She holds a PhD in Interdisciplinary Studies from Virginia Tech, and her work bridges critical theory and STS. WHO'S IT FOR? Idea people. Founders. Builders. Creatives. Researchers. The Curious. And their Supporters -------------- FORMAT Our format explores ideas together through our diverse backgrounds, while building relationships and community through the process. We want you to talk to each other, instead of just being talked at. 5:30PM - Settle in, grab a drink and some food at the bar, and meet some new people before we start our event. 6:00PM - Our conversation begins with our facilitator presenting the knowledge and context for the conversation along the way. The conversation between attendees will explore from surface level understandings, to deep implications and future iterations. 7:30PM - Meet and connect with new people, catch up with people you haven't seen in a while, discover all the different ways you overlap. And then just hang out, grab a drink, play some pool or ping pong! Or stay for the band afterwards! Our desire is to be the antithesis of NYC's corporate panel and transactional networking culture. We aim to create a vibrant idea and build space in NYC that focuses on the passion and values beyond the money and the hustle. ------------------ ABOUT COHORT Cohort is a space and home for ideas, and the people who think about them, create new ones, and build things from them. Many of us are founders, builders, artists, researchers, and their supporters here in NYC. Our goal is to turn the city into a campus after college. We hold idea and discussion events, coworking events for support and accountability for those building and creating things, and pure social events to build genuine relationships and community. Subscribe, browse our calendar, and join us for our next events! 📸 Photography Notice We may take photos and video at our events to share on social media and our website. We use it to spread the word and help more people find this community. By attending, you're giving us permission to use those photos and videos in anything related to Cohort's promotion and outreach. If you'd rather not be photographed, just let us know when you arrive and we'll make sure you're not included.
