What to look forward to
A rally calling for intentional technology use will take place ahead of a special SPS Board meeting focused on educational technology and AI.
Inside the event
**Show up for intentional tech in our schools: Wednesday, November 4**
Seattle Public Schools is holding a Special Board Meeting on educational technology and AI, and Seattle Families for Intentional Tech (SFIT) is rallying with MAMA Seattle (Mothers Against Media Addiction) and Distraction-Free Schools WA beforehand.
**Now is the time to be seen and heard by the district.**
We are asking SPS to
- **Create an EdTech Advisory Committee **within ITAC to evaluate current and future edtech on safety, legality, and educational efficacy over paper-based or hands-on methods.
- **Provide Ongoing EdTech Transparency **each school year before any product collects student data, following the FTC’s guidance on COPPA.
- **Get Consent for Data Collection **by publishing a list of each edtech product by grade level, and notifying families of any new tools before introduction.
- **Set Screen Time Limits by Grade **for use throughout the school day, and do not allow use of devices for free time or rewards.
- **Pause Student-Facing Generative AI **unless and until products are vetted for safety, legality, and educational efficacy, and tell parents if AI is used to assess student work.
- **Allow Paper-Based Alternatives** for students and families, with support for teachers, without penalty or reprisal.
Tell a friend, and bring your kids!
