Story brief
3 key pointsRivian’s October 22, 2026 acquisition brings Third Dimension AI’s scene-simulation technology and staff into its autonomy organization, with intended applications in consumer vehicles and robotaxis. The platform can turn recorded driving data into editable 3D scenarios, letting teams vary conditions for training and testing driver-assistance and self-driving systems. Rivian did not disclose the price, and the company describes integration and resulting improvements as future possibilities, not delivered outcomes.

James Philbin said Rivian receives more than 400,000 vehicle-data sequences daily; that is incoming data, not synthetic output.
- 02
Rivian’s data collection includes aggregated, anonymized trip data and depends on owners permitting external-camera data transmission.

Third Dimension AI had 15 employees, most in the United Kingdom, and was founded in 2024 by Tolga Kart and Piotr Sokolski.
Rivian is buying a way to revisit difficult driving situations without waiting for another encounter on the road. The electric-vehicle maker announced on October 22, 2026, that it had acquired Third Dimension AI, bringing its simulation platform in-house to help generate training data and test driver-assistance and self-driving systems.
Financial terms were not disclosed. Third Dimension’s leadership and technical staff will join Rivian’s autonomy research and engineering teams. Rivian described the transaction as a way to bring both the technology and the people developing it inside the company, with intended uses across its consumer-vehicle and robotaxi programs.
Recorded roads, controllable worlds
Third Dimension’s platform turns real-world data into detailed, controllable three-dimensional environments, according to Rivian. Engineers can use those environments to reconstruct a driving situation and create variations of it. The intended output is synthetic data—data generated in simulation—for training autonomous systems and checking how they behave.
Third Dimension co-founder and CEO Tolga Kart said joining Rivian would allow the startup to deploy its simulation technology at scale, supporting both of those tasks.
“Simulation is central to how we train and validate our autonomous driving systems,” said James Philbin, SVP, Autonomy & AI. “Third Dimension's team has built impressive technology that turns real-world data into detailed 3D environments. This allows us to recreate challenging driving situations, vary the conditions, and improve how our systems respond.”

A new use for Rivian’s vehicle data
Rivian already has a substantial stream of driving records to draw from. UA.News, citing TechCrunch, reported that Philbin said the company receives more than 400,000 data sequences a day from customers’ vehicles. That figure describes incoming vehicle data, not the amount of synthetic data Third Dimension’s platform can produce.
The same account says Rivian collects aggregated, anonymized trip data from tens of thousands of R1S vehicles, delivery vans and R2 SUVs. Collection depends on owners allowing data transmission from external cameras. Third Dimension’s technology is intended to work with Rivian’s datasets to model road scenarios, connecting recorded journeys with virtual reconstruction.
UA.News also reported that Third Dimension has 15 employees, most based in the United Kingdom. Founded in 2024 by Kart and Piotr Sokolski, the startup initially developed its technology to speed up video-game development, while also considering defense and autonomous-transportation applications. The acquisition puts that work inside a vehicle manufacturer’s autonomy organization.
The intended benefits remain forward-looking. Rivian’s announcement explicitly treats integration of Third Dimension’s technology, advances in autonomous-driving capabilities and vehicle-validation timelines as uncertain future outcomes.
