Story brief
3 key pointsMistral’s Large 4 preview is aimed at specialized business and defense work, but its cybersecurity pitch remains difficult to verify: CEO Arthur Mensch named no rival models or benchmark scores. The bigger practical question is access: reports differ on who can use the preview now, and Mistral’s underlying weights may not be distributed until later. If released as open weights, the model could give organizations more control over deployment and customization; that advantage is not yet the same as having the parameters in hand.

CNBC reports that Large 4 still trails leading systems in coding, despite coding being one of its target specialties.
Mistral released a preview of Mistral Large 4 on October 6, 2026, putting a name and a trillion-parameter model behind its latest competitive pitch. Earlier that day, CEO Arthur Mensch said its newest system surpassed Chinese models in some areas, including cybersecurity. His comparison came without named rivals or benchmark scores.
Also nicknamed Le Chonk, the model is intended to compete with leading general-purpose systems while targeting specialized business work. Mistral calls it the strongest open-weight model developed outside China by a substantial margin. Open-weight models make their underlying parameters available so organizations can modify and run them themselves, rather than depend entirely on a provider’s closed service.
A cybersecurity claim without a scorecard
Speaking at Ai Everything in Abu Dhabi, Mensch described the newest model as “above the Chinese models on certain aspects, including cyber.” Startup Fortune, citing Reuters, said he supplied no model name, competing system, benchmark or score. His statement was narrower than a claim of overall superiority: cybersecurity was one example of the areas he highlighted.
The launch carries a broader capability claim. Mistral told WIRED that Large 4 is “very, very close” to some proprietary models. That does not make it a leader in every task. CNBC reports that it still trails the leading systems in areas including coding, even though coding is one of its stated specialties.
Preview access is not the final release
Immediate access is described differently by the two outlets. CNBC says the preview is going to developers, cybersecurity leaders and state authorities, ahead of a wider release later in October. WIRED describes the model as freely available for anyone to use and customize, with a final version expected by the end of the month.
CNBC also describes distribution of the model’s underlying weights as forthcoming. That leaves a material distinction between using the preview and obtaining the parameters needed to run and customize the model independently.
If you use a closed model, there is no guarantee it will still be there tomorrow.

Specialized work and control over defenses
Mistral says Large 4 is optimized for cyberdefense, coding, manufacturing, finance and electrical engineering. Lample told WIRED that specialized domains offer opportunities other labs may not emphasize. He also argues that relying on proprietary models to repel cyberthreats exposes companies to the risk of losing access to a critical defense.
According to Mistral, Large 4 was trained for two months on 4,000 Nvidia Grace Blackwell GPUs in its own European data centers. The company also told WIRED it trained the model from scratch.

Mistral Large 4 trails Chinese open models in independent tests, despite cybersecurity strength
Mistral’s newest AI model has a cybersecurity standout, but not an overall lead over Chinese open models. Artificial Analysis gave Large 4 Preview a score of 38 on its Intelligence Index, below five Chinese rivals. Its strongest security-test result sits alongside a less flattering comparison: higher benchmark task costs than several competing models.
The evaluation gives substance to the competitive claims surrounding Mistral’s October 6 release. Artificial Analysis calls Large 4 the highest-scoring model from outside the United States and China on its index. That distinction describes a geographic lead within this evaluation—not leadership across all models or every kind of work.
The Intelligence Index combines 10 evaluations, including professional document reasoning, coding, knowledge and long-context reasoning. Large 4’s score matches GPT-6 Luna at its maximum setting. The Chinese open-weight models ahead of it span a range of scores, rather than one narrowly superior competitor:
Xiaomi MiMo-V2.6-Pro: 46.
Z.ai GLM-5.3 at maximum effort: 45.
Moonshot Kimi K3 at maximum effort: 44.
Z.ai GLM-5.3-Flash: 42.
DeepSeek V4.1 Flash at maximum effort: 39.
There is also an availability distinction. Those competitors have open weights; Large 4 does not yet. Mistral offers a public API preview and says it will release the weights by the end of October 2026. Artificial Analysis currently labels the preview proprietary.
Cybersecurity provides the clearest counterpoint to the overall ranking. Large 4 scored 50 on Artificial Analysis’s Cyber Index, tying GLM-5.3-Flash but trailing MiMo-V2.6-Pro’s 56. Its strongest component was CyberGym-E2E-AA, where it finished ahead of both MiMo-V2.6-Pro and GPT-6 Luna.
Mistral describes the CyberGym task as reproducing a real vulnerability in open-source software and then patching it. That makes the result relevant to a particular security workflow. But it is only one of three tests in the Cyber Index, and Large 4’s results on the other two are substantially lower.
