GPT-4-Turbo has just reclaimed the No. 1 spot on the Arena leaderboard

OpenAI has introduced an enhanced version of GPT-4 Turbo, specifically designed for its premium ChatGPT users. The new model, dubbed "gpt-4-turbo-2024-04-09," boasts advancements in writing, mathematics, logical reasoning, and coding, alongside an updated knowledge database, with training based on data up until December 2023. This upgrade aims to provide more concise, direct, and conversational responses in ChatGPT interactions.

In a recent announcement, OpenAI highlighted the availability of this updated GPT-4 Turbo model exclusively for ChatGPT Plus, Team, or Enterprise subscribers. This release is part of a broader initiative that also saw the introduction of GPT-4 Turbo with Vision in OpenAI’s API, expanding the model's capabilities to include image understanding. These developments are intended to enhance user experience and expand the model's functionality.

The rollout of the new GPT-4 Turbo model occurs amidst a challenging period for OpenAI. Recent reports have shed light on controversies surrounding the use of OpenAI's DALL-E model by the military and internal upheavals, including the dismissal of two researchers. These events reflect the complex landscape in which OpenAI operates, balancing innovation with ethical considerations and public scrutiny.

TikTok Plots Using Virtual Influencers for Advertising

TikTok is gearing up to introduce an AI creator tool on its platform, aiming to create a new wave of virtual influencers who can generate and present advertisements. This innovative feature will enable advertisers and TikTok Shop vendors to craft scripts that these AI avatars can perform, potentially altering the dynamics of how products and services are promoted on the site. Although the feature is still under development and its effectiveness compared to human influencers remains uncertain, TikTok is exploring this path to complement its existing array of content creators.

The Information has revealed that while TikTok is experimenting with these AI avatars, initial tests indicate they haven't yet matched the effectiveness of human influencers in driving e-commerce sales. This raises questions about how the introduction of AI influencers will impact the financial dynamics for human creators on the platform, especially considering the recent shutdown of TikTok's $1 billion creator fund. The company's strategy on balancing the interests of its human and AI content creators is still unfolding.

In addition to this AI influencer initiative, TikTok has been actively incorporating AI into various aspects of its platform. Recent endeavors include a Song Generator feature that allows users to create music using AI and the implementation of AI tags on filters and effects. These developments showcase TikTok's ongoing experimentation and integration of artificial intelligence technologies to enhance user engagement and creativity on the platform.

Humane’s $699 Ai Pin is now available

Humane has launched its inaugural product, the Ai Pin, a device designed to integrate the strengths of generative AI technologies like OpenAI's ChatGPT. Co-founders Bethany Bongiorno and Imran Chaudhri, both former Apple employees, aim to create a series of AI-focused hardware. The Ai Pin, priced at $699, offers a voice-operated, always-on experience, encouraging users to engage less with their smartphones.

The product reflects the founders' response to a societal concern: the pervasive use of smartphones to the detriment of real-life interactions. Bongiorno shared an anecdote about a family absorbed in their phones at a dinner, which partly inspired the Ai Pin's development. This device is part of a burgeoning field of AI-centric hardware, as seen with similar innovations at tech expos like CES and MWC.

Humane's package includes the Ai Pin, an additional battery, and an AI charging case, with color variants starting at $799. The company also offers a range of accessories and a subscription service priced at $24/month, including three free months with the pin purchase, signaling their commitment to blending advanced technology with user-centric design.

OpenAI Researchers, Including Ally of Sutskever, Fired for Alleged Leaking

OpenAI recently dismissed two researchers, Leopold Aschenbrenner and Pavel Izmailov, after an internal investigation, the specifics of which remain undisclosed. Aschenbrenner, a noted figure in the AI safety domain and a graduate of Columbia University was involved in advocating for safe AI development, aligning with the effective altruism movement's focus on long-term existential threats.

In a related backdrop, there were tumultuous events last November when Sam Altman, OpenAI's CEO, was terminated by the board, an action that was reportedly influenced by chief scientist Ilya Sutskever. The decision led to internal backlash and a threatened mass resignation from employees, although Sutskever later expressed remorse over the incident's handling.

These firings mark significant changes within OpenAI, coming after Altman was reinstated on the board in March 2024. Before his brief removal, an internal investigation had exonerated Altman of any misconduct. This period reflects a time of internal conflict within OpenAI, amid concerns over the fast pace of AI development and associated safety challenges.
