Specialized carriers, drivers and repair crews are gaining work as equipment moves to new campuses. The harder question for fleets and host communities is whether the project pipeline lasts beyond each site’s construction phase.

AI data-center construction is giving flatbed and heavy-haul carriers fresh work, moving large power and computing equipment toward sites increasingly outside traditional freight hubs. The buildout is also raising demand for specialized drivers and maintenance workers.
The opportunity begins with the physical build. Transformers, generators, cooling systems, servers, racks, wiring and construction materials reach a data-center site primarily by truck. Rail can handle part of the trip, but freight still generally needs a truck for the final leg. The large and heavy loads concentrate demand in specialized equipment and drivers, rather than across every freight category.
New freight lanes follow the buildout
Site decisions are reshaping routes as well as adding volume. Power availability and land costs can draw projects into markets that were not conventional freight hubs. Georgia and Texas are already seeing spikes in trucking traffic and route activity tied to data-center development, according to logistics executive Janelle Griffith.
Research cited by Griffith puts 67% of planned data-center developments in rural areas.
The same cited research places 39% of planned facilities in counties that currently have no data center.
The labor effect extends beyond the cab. Cox Fleet’s Patrick Brennan said projects are increasing demand for commercial-driver-license holders, diesel technicians, fleet-maintenance workers and logistics staff. Added equipment and more frequent use also increase maintenance needs. Brennan said flatbed and heavy-haul spot rates reached multiyear highs during the summer in construction-heavy markets.
The upside comes with cash pressure
Smaller carriers can gain steadier freight, new customers and new routes. But higher volume may require them to pay for trucks, drivers, fuel, labor and maintenance before customers pay their invoices. Jennifer Lockett of transportation-financing firm altLINE characterized that timing gap as a working-capital challenge, especially for carriers taking on larger customers or upfront costs.

A completed campus needs far fewer trucks
The construction surge does not become a comparable stream of operating freight. Kyle Roberts of Newmark Mountain West described an “extraordinary drop off” in truck traffic after a site is built. Kyre Lahtinen of Wake Forest University said operating data centers need comparatively little logistics support compared with facilities that handle physical goods. Fleets and communities therefore face a durability test: whether the next projects arrive fast enough to replace freight that disappears at completed sites.
