Airbnb sells intellectual property to an AI lab controlled by CEO Brian Chesky
Independent directors approved the arrangement, but the filing leaves the transferred assets and their valuation undisclosed. Airbnb also secured licensing and future investment rights.
Airbnb’s filing records a November transfer to a private AI venture tied to CEO Brian Chesky and CTO Ahmad Al-Dahle, but does not name the assets or assign them a standalone value. The $7.1 million Airbnb received combines IP proceeds with expense reimbursements, so it is not the disclosed purchase price. Airbnb also secured internal-use rights to some of the lab’s IP and the right to invest in later funding rounds; independent directors approved the arrangement, while key commercial terms remain unclear.

The filing does not disclose which intellectual property Airbnb transferred or how it was valued.

Airbnb’s $7.1 million receipt includes expense reimbursements as well as sale proceeds, not a separately stated IP price.

The license covers certain lab IP for Airbnb’s internal use; the investment right applies to future rounds and is not an investment already made.
Airbnb has sold intellectual property to a private AI lab founded and controlled by its own CEO, Brian Chesky. Chief technology officer Ahmad Al-Dahle also owns a stake, and both executives work for the lab. Skift reported the transaction on November 7, citing Airbnb’s quarterly filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
One cash total, two kinds of payment
The November transaction brought Airbnb $7.1 million in cash, combining proceeds from the intellectual-property sale with expense reimbursements. The figure is not a separately disclosed purchase price for the IP.
Nor does the filing identify the specific intellectual property or explain its valuation, according to Skift. Those omissions leave two basic commercial questions unanswered: what Airbnb transferred to the executives’ private venture, and how the assets were priced.
Airbnb retains a route into the lab
Cash was not the only part of the exchange. Airbnb received a license to certain lab intellectual property for internal use, along with the right to invest in future financing rounds, The Profile reported, citing Skift.
The scope of those rights matters. The license covers certain intellectual property and is for Airbnb’s internal use; it is not described as ownership of the lab’s assets. Likewise, a right to participate in future financing is an option for a later transaction, not a disclosed investment already made.
Independent approval, overlapping executive roles
A special committee of independent directors with no interest in the transaction approved the arrangement, Skift reported. That approval addresses who reviewed the deal, while the undisclosed asset details and valuation remain separate questions about its commercial terms. The disclosure gaps are not, by themselves, evidence of wrongdoing by either executive.
Airbnb says Chesky’s and Al-Dahle’s roles at the lab do not change their responsibilities to Airbnb, according to The Profile.
