Amazon’s Alexa Adds Update Me When Alerts Before Shoppers Search

Amazon has added a new kind of prompt to Alexa for Shopping: notifications tied to events such as a brand launch, a new book, a TV season, or a concert tour. Update Me When gives the assistant a role before a shopper has searched for a product.

Shopping prompts start with the event

Update Me When sends personalized notifications when something new or relevant happens that may lead to a purchase. Amazon’s examples include a favored brand releasing a product line, an author publishing a book, a technology company launching a product, a new television season, and an artist announcing a tour.

Historically, Alexa mainly answered product questions after shoppers asked them directly. The new feature instead uses an outside development as the trigger for a notification that can return a customer to a shopping flow.

A new trigger atop existing purchase actions

The event alerts arrive on a system that already links notifications to transactions. Alexa for Shopping’s price tracking can alert a customer when an item reaches a chosen price or discount; users can also opt to have the item bought automatically when that condition is met.

Other Alexa for Shopping tasks

• Personalized deals, shopping guides, carts built from past purchases, and price-history tracking.
• AI product overviews, handwritten-list transcription into a cart, and item comparison.

A neighboring system tracks products in Amazon’s store

Amazon also offers Interests, where customers write personalized shopping prompts and receive automatic notifications when matching products, restocks, or deals become available. That feature is oriented around selection in Amazon’s store; Update Me When is framed around releases and announcements tied to brands, creators, shows, artists, and technology companies.

Alexa for Shopping itself is a recent name: Amazon renamed Rufus on May 13, 2026. Update Me When now extends that renamed assistant from discovery and evaluation into an earlier stage of purchase intent, while leaving shoppers in charge of defining the alerts they receive.
