The reported purchase gives Anthropic a route to add power capacity for its expanding AI business, but it is an equipment-and-installation commitment rather than electricity already available to data centers. The deal points to the scale and lead time of securing power infrastructure as demand for Claude grows. It also remains unconfirmed by the companies: Reuters could not independently verify the Financial Times report, and neither party commented.
Anthropic reportedly bought the commitments from San Antonio-based OnePWR Solutions in late September; the Financial Times disclosed the deal on November 8.
The agreement covers 1.7 gigawatts of heavy-duty generators plus engineering and construction capabilities to install them.
Anthropic did not acquire OnePWR, and the supplier’s employees did not transfer to Anthropic.
Anthropic’s search for data-center electricity has reached a reported $3.4 billion agreement covering gas-fired generators and the capabilities needed to install them. The Financial Times disclosed the transaction on November 8. Its scale rests on commitments for equipment—not electricity already being generated—with 1.7 gigawatts of heavy-duty generators covered by the purchase.
Anthropic bought the commitments in late September from OnePWR Solutions, a San Antonio, Texas-based equipment supplier, according to Reuters’ account of the FT reporting, published by CNBC. The Sunday disclosure therefore concerns a transaction made several weeks earlier, rather than an agreement newly signed this weekend.
The installation component extends the agreement beyond the generators themselves. Engineering and construction capabilities needed to put the equipment in place were included in the deal, the FT reported, citing a person familiar with the matter. That gives the reported purchase both an equipment component and an installation component.
Strong demand for Anthropic’s Claude family of AI models has prompted the company to secure additional computing and power capacity, Reuters said. The generator agreement addresses the power side of that search, tying a substantial reported purchase to the infrastructure needed to support the company’s AI business.
The purchase also sits against a much larger spending expectation. Reuters reported in September that Anthropic expected to spend more than $500 billion over the next 10 years building AI infrastructure. That longer-term figure describes anticipated expenditure, not money already spent, and covers infrastructure more broadly than this generator transaction.
The transaction remains attributed to the FT rather than confirmed by the companies. Reuters said it could not immediately verify the report, and Anthropic and OnePWR did not respond to its requests for comment.
