The new feature preserves signed capture data for comparison with later versions, but Apple will initially show its reference images only in Photos.

Apple is adding a provenance check to iPhone 18 Pro photography: signed sensor data captured when a photo is taken is processed through Private Cloud Compute into an unalterable reference image. Initially viewable in Photos, it gives viewers a fixed comparison point for detecting later edits, while APIs could extend the workflow to third-party apps. Apple is also adding SynthID support for identifying AI-created or altered images, but that serves a different purpose.
Reference Image starts in Photos; Apple APIs allow other apps to integrate it, making broader availability dependent on developers.
The reference is generated from signed sensor data captured at exposure, not from the edited file being checked.
Apple positions the feature for photojournalists and photographers, but its practical test is side-by-side comparison.
Apple has introduced Apple Reference Image for photos captured with the iPhone 18 Pro. Apple says the feature can help users determine whether a photo changed by comparing later versions against an unalterable reference image processed from data collected when the photo was taken.
Apple announced the feature during its Surprise and Shine event. The company compares the reference image to a digital negative and says it is vital for photojournalists and photographers. Its practical promise is narrower: a viewer can put the reference beside another version of that photo and inspect whether changes were made.
The record begins with the camera sensor, not with a finished reference image. When a photo is taken, the iPhone’s main camera sensor captures signed sensor data. Apple says its Private Cloud Compute service subsequently processes that data into an unalterable image that users can view in Photos.
Reference Image is tied to a particular iPhone 18 Pro capture and the versions compared against it. Apple also said it will support SynthID to help identify images created or altered with AI. The two parts of the announcement have different jobs: Reference Image preserves a comparison point for a camera capture, while SynthID is intended to signal possible AI involvement.
Apple initially plans to make reference images viewable only in the Photos app. At the same time, it is providing APIs, software interfaces that let apps work with a feature, so developers can integrate Apple Reference Image into their own products. That leaves Apple’s app as the starting point for viewing the reference images, even as the company offers a route for outside apps to use the capability.
