Apple Music Plans to Put AI Labels Where Listeners Can See Them

Apple Music plans to show listeners when music content was materially made with AI, using a Made With AI label due later this year. Providers will have to disclose qualifying AI use, but Apple has not explained how it will enforce complete and accurate tagging.

Apple told music-industry partners that the label will be visible to all Apple Music users, though it did not give a specific launch date. That is a shift in the practical role of the service’s AI metadata: information supplied during delivery is set to become a signal people can see on Apple Music.

From upload metadata to a public signal

The mechanism is Apple Music’s AI Transparency Tags. Apple introduced them in March for record labels and distributors, covering artwork, tracks, compositions including lyrics, and music videos. The tags were initially optional, and Apple left providers to decide what counted as AI-generated content. The new policy makes disclosure mandatory when AI created a material portion of uploaded content.

The disclosure threshold

• Providers must add a tag when AI created a material portion of the uploaded content.
• The rule includes material Apple calls AI-platform-generated: content primarily derived from a generative AI service.
• Apple says labels and distributors should apply the tags because they are best positioned to know how their content was made.

That places content providers at the center of the system, even as Apple develops its own detection capability. Oliver Schusser, an Apple Music executive, said the company has an in-house system for detecting AI-generated music but was still relying on content makers to disclose AI use. The promised label therefore depends on both provider declarations and Apple’s as-yet-undescribed enforcement process.

Spotify’s announced policy is not a version of Apple’s. Apple’s disclosure system covers several kinds of music content, including tracks, while Spotify’s proposed designation attaches to the artist profile. Spotify also links that designation to distribution in its editorial and algorithmic recommendations; Apple’s announcement centers on disclosure.

A disclosure push shaped by upload volume

The labeling effort arrives amid concern that an increase in AI-generated uploads can enable streaming fraud and manipulation. In April, Schusser said more than one-third of Apple Music’s monthly uploads were 100% AI-generated, while AI music made up less than 0.5% of actual listening. Those company-provided figures point to a large gap between the volume entering the service and its reported share of listening.

Apple’s plan also follows a push led by the RIAA and IFPI for streaming services to disclose AI-generated music in a manner similar to explicit-content labels. The company has now set out who must make the disclosure and what level of AI contribution triggers it. Its planned consumer label gives that industry push a concrete listener-facing form, even before Apple has named a rollout date.
