Apple Releases macOS 27 With a Siri That Can Read Your Screen

Apple has released macOS 27 Golden Gate, putting a redesigned Siri at the center of its latest Mac update. The assistant can use the active window or a selected part of the screen as context, then answer questions, summarize material, search images, or take actions. That changes the Mac from a place where Siri receives a request into one where it can work from what is already in view.

The mechanism is deliberately close to the desktop itself. Siri can be called from anywhere on screen. Users can add the focused window to its context, or draw a crosshair around one screen region. A product page, for example, can become the basis for a question about alternatives without asking Siri to assess every open tab.

Two shortcuts for supplying context

• Command + Shift + 6 opens a tool for selecting a specific screen region.

The same shift reaches into retrieval. Spotlight now accepts Siri questions, lets people narrow searches to Applications, Files, Actions, or Clipboard, can run Shortcuts, and surfaces recent searches. TechCrunch also found that Siri could pull information from files, emails, and messages, including membership IDs, trip details, and dates inside documents.

A writing assistant built into the desktop

Apple is also placing Siri in the parts of the Mac where text is produced. Users can select text to have Siri proofread, improve, or rewrite it, and can ask it to draft inside text fields. The update adds a dedicated Siri app, whose conversation history syncs privately through iCloud across Apple devices.

Several surrounding features make the assistant’s reach less confined to a chat window. Safari can organize tabs by topic and track pages for changes, including price drops, privacy-policy updates, and new posts. Apple also says Safari can notify people about restocks and create custom extensions from a description; Photos gains Spatial Reframing, Extend, and an upgraded Clean Up tool.

The rollout has clear limits

macOS 27 is available for supported Macs, including Apple Silicon MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models from 2020 onward, Apple Silicon iMacs from 2021 onward, Mac mini models from 2020 onward, Mac Studio models from 2022 onward, Mac Pro models from 2023 onward, and MacBook Neo. But Apple Intelligence and Siri AI specifically require an M1-or-later Mac or MacBook Neo.

Siri AI begins as an English beta. French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish support is planned for October. The wider operating-system release also includes Liquid Glass interface refinements, such as adjustable transparency, redesigned icons, edge-to-edge sidebars, and clearer active-window highlighting, plus performance and search improvements.

The headline feature is therefore not simply a more conversational Siri. It is a system-level assistant designed to interpret a window, a screen selection, and personal material across core Mac workflows. Apple has described that access as a route to more relevant answers; the practical test is whether the assistant proves dependable enough for people to hand over that context during everyday work.
