Arab League urges joint information checks to counter AI-generated falsehoods
The appeal, made at a seminar with Cairo University, puts information verification alongside professional media standards. It is a call for cooperation, not an adopted law.
The Arab League is urging its 22 member states to build shared systems for verifying information and countering misleading content, including AI-generated falsehoods. The appeal is not a law or regulation, and it places AI within a broader effort to restore trust in media amid regional conflicts and rapid digital change. For media institutions and policymakers, the next step to watch is whether the call leads to practical cooperation or remains a seminar recommendation.

Rebuilding public trust in media after wars and crises is the goal of an Arab League appeal for countries to work together on checking information. The league called on member states to develop joint verification mechanisms to counter disinformation, including AI-generated false content, according to a Saudi Press Agency dispatch published by Arab News.
The call came during a seminar organized by the League of Arab States’ General Secretariat with Cairo University’s Faculty of Mass Communication. Academics and specialist researchers gathered to discuss the future of Arab media amid regional conflicts, crises and rapid digital change.
The appeal spans a regional organization with 22 member states across the Middle East and North Africa. Its requested response combines checking information with countering misleading media content; AI-generated falsehoods are one part of that agenda, rather than the seminar’s sole focus.
Accuracy alongside coordination
Ahmed Rashid Khattabi, the league’s assistant secretary-general and head of its Media and Communication Sector, stressed professional standards and accuracy in confronting rumors, hate speech and misleading content. Minister Plenipotentiary Alaa Al-Tamimi delivered the remarks on his behalf.
Khattabi described media organizations as influential in managing conflicts and shaping public opinion. He urged them to raise public awareness and rebuild confidence in information sources, with particular emphasis on societies affected by wars and crises.
A wider media cooperation agenda
Discussions also covered expanding cooperation among Arab media organizations, safeguarding information security and examining AI’s effect on content production. That placed the technology within a wider discussion about how media institutions should adapt to digital change.
Participants considered how government and institutional communication could help build public trust. They also highlighted stronger partnerships and practical initiatives to modernize Arab media and keep pace with technological developments.
