Arm and UNICEF have launched AI in Play, an open ecosystem meant to help technology companies, governments, entrepreneurs, young people and communities build AI solutions for emerging economies. Its promise is large: the partners aim to reach 2.5 million children and community members across 12 countries, while the evidence offered today is a set of targets and a model for moving local projects beyond pilots.
The initiative is the next phase of Arm and UNICEF’s decade-long partnership. It is designed to connect established programs, technology partners and local innovators in one ecosystem, with the stated goal of bringing promising AI-powered work from ideas and pilots to broader impact faster.

The design reflects a constraint common to many intended settings: internet access can be limited or unreliable. Arm says edge AI, which processes data on a device instead of depending continuously on cloud infrastructure, can make AI experiences faster and more reliable in schools and communities with constrained connectivity and technology access.
The partners are not starting from zero. Over the past 10 years, they say their work has reached more than 770,000 children across emerging economies. Their recent projects include AI-enabled air-quality monitoring in schools in Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Bookbot, a virtual reading assistant for children in Colombia, and Tinkering with Tech, an AI-literacy initiative.
AI in Play shifts that work from individual programs toward a coalition-building strategy. The central wager is that local knowledge, technical support and investment can be assembled around solutions that fit communities’ needs, while giving young people a role in building—not only receiving—the AI systems intended for them.
