Ascend Learning Acquires M7 Health to Add AI Scheduling to Workforce Business

Healthcare systems could soon have one vendor spanning a clinician’s path from training and credentials to the schedule that determines each shift. Ascend Learning has acquired M7 Health, an AI-powered workforce scheduling and staffing platform, to build that connected offering with its existing StaffGarden and Laudio brands.

The acquisition moves Ascend beyond preparing, credentialing and developing healthcare workers into the operational problem of deploying them. M7 forecasts staffing demand, automatically balances schedules, and identifies and recruits people to fill gaps, according to Ascend. The company says the combined portfolio will cover professional development, scheduling, staff deployment, engagement and retention.

From credentials to the shift

Ascend’s stated strategy is to bring more context into staffing choices than a conventional schedule can provide. Lissy Hu, Ascend’s chief executive, said the company wants schedules to account for what workers are qualified to do, what they are working toward and what may help keep them in the profession. That frames scheduling as part of workforce management, rather than a stand-alone administrative function.

A larger operating footprint

The deal gives Ascend another layer in a portfolio already built around healthcare career preparation. Ascend said it supports more than 60% of nursing schools and 245,000 allied health professionals each year. StaffGarden focuses on competency, credentials and career development, while Laudio provides frontline leaders with tools including digital rounding and tiered huddles.

M7 supplies the shift-level layer. Its software combines automation, real-time visibility and staff preference data to help healthcare organizations schedule and communicate with frontline teams. Ascend says M7 works alongside existing timekeeping and human-resources systems, rather than replacing them.

Promised savings, still a company claim

Ascend says organizations using M7 have cut administrative time spent on scheduling by more than 60%, reduced premium labor spending by up to 40%, and recorded average staff fairness scores above 94%. Those are company-reported customer outcomes, rather than guaranteed results for health systems using the combined offering.

For M7, the appeal is access to Ascend’s information across the healthcare workforce journey. Ilana Borkenstein, M7’s co-founder and chief executive, said the companies could help health systems build staffing infrastructure and deploy talent more strategically and cost-effectively. The practical test is whether the planned connection between career data and scheduling produces better staffing decisions.

The M7 transaction follows Ascend’s acquisition last month of Teaching Assignment Management System, or TAMS, which helps colleges and universities manage teaching assignments and workloads. That purchase extended Ascend’s portfolio supporting the healthcare workforce and institutions building its future pipeline.
