ChatGPT Can Now Send Apple Messages. Its Mac Permissions Set the Terms.

OpenAI has given ChatGPT a new role inside Apple Messages on Mac: it can read and search conversations, summarize them, write replies and send texts. The company says the integration runs locally and does not create an index of all messages, but its value depends on permissions that give the app access to on-device message history and the ability to operate Messages.

The feature rolled out August 20 for ChatGPT on Mac. It turns a chat assistant into a tool that can work across ongoing conversations and message history, rather than simply suggest text in a separate window. OpenAI says the plug-in also works with Codex and ChatGPT Work, extending it beyond personal ChatGPT use.

The permissions are the product boundary

Setup requires more than switching on a ChatGPT feature. Users must approve access in ChatGPT and macOS, including Full Disk Access, contacts and automation tools. During setup, a ChatGPT permissions screen says the app will access the computer’s on-device message history.

OpenAI says the integration uses AppleScript and Accessibility, existing macOS tools that can operate the Messages app. The stated design therefore puts the immediate access point on the Mac, while relying on operating-system permissions to read information and take actions in Apple’s communications app.

What ChatGPT can do after connection

Those functions cover two different kinds of work. Searching a past thread or asking for a summary helps retrieve and interpret information. Local processing is a limit, not a full explanation

OpenAI says the plug-in requires user consent, runs locally on the Mac and does not create an index of all messages. Those statements describe limits on the company’s stated design, even as the feature accesses on-device message history. They do not change the fact that users must first authorize broad access through both the app and macOS.

One material detail remains unresolved: OpenAI’s public description did not immediately clarify the operational specifics of what local processing means. For someone considering the integration, that leaves the permission screens and the per-message approval choice as the clearest controls described for the feature.

A new route into Apple’s messaging layer

The launch lands amid broader friction between Apple and OpenAI. Apple sued OpenAI the previous month, alleging that the AI company stole information about upcoming products. An Apple representative did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the Messages feature.

For users, the immediate choice is more concrete than that dispute. The tool can save time finding, analyzing and preparing messages, but it also asks for access to message history and can communicate as the user. OpenAI’s own warning points to the practical default: require approval for each send and preserve manual review before ChatGPT speaks in your name.
