Downdetector recorded more than 1,100 OpenAI reports and nearly 4,600 Outlook reports, both snapshots rather than affected-account totals.

ChatGPT Work launched in July for creating slides, web apps, spreadsheets, and documents, making stalled tasks a direct product failure.

OpenAI reported elevated errors and latency for roughly three hours while Microsoft investigated degraded Exchange Online features separately.
Some ChatGPT Work users could not begin or continue tasks on August 31 as Microsoft warned of degraded Exchange Online functionality. The disruptions occurred at the same time, but no connection between them had been reported.
OpenAI said ChatGPT Work had experienced elevated errors and latency for roughly three hours. Users across multiple subscription plans might be unable to start tasks or keep existing ones moving, and the company said it was implementing a mitigation.
Different symptoms, separate responses
Microsoft said users might experience degraded functionality across various Exchange Online features. It was reviewing service telemetry and diagnostic data to isolate the source of that issue.
The companies described distinct service effects. OpenAI’s update centered on the ability to start or continue Work tasks; Microsoft’s described degraded functionality in Exchange Online features.
Downdetector showed more than 1,100 reports involving OpenAI products at 2:24 p.m. ET. The reports had peaked earlier in the day.
Downdetector showed nearly 4,600 Outlook reports shortly after 2:24 p.m. ET. Those reports had also peaked earlier in the day.
The two figures show people reporting problems at a particular moment, rather than a count of every affected account. Outlook drew the larger snapshot of reports, while both services’ reports had already peaked earlier that day.
A new agent’s service test
OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Work in July as an enterprise AI agent designed for tasks such as creating slides, web apps, spreadsheets and documents. That makes an inability to begin or continue a task a direct interruption to the work the product is designed to handle.
At the time of the updates, OpenAI was working on its mitigation while Microsoft was still isolating the source of its issue. Neither update identified an underlying cause, and the concurrent timing alone did not establish one shared incident.
