Save Our Voices Now is turning concern about unauthorized synthetic speech into a demand for statutory rights for every person in Britain. A petition and open letter now test whether that demand can reach legislation.

Save Our Voices Now is pressing UK lawmakers to establish statutory ownership of every person’s voice, after roughly 80 signatories—including Nicola Coughlan, Hugh Bonneville and Matt Lucas—backed an open letter and a Gov.uk petition. Founder Peter Caulfield says capable systems can clone a voice in about three seconds; the campaign also cites 28% of UK adults targeted by voice-cloning scams.
The proposal would shift voice-cloning disputes from private contracts toward a statutory identity right applying across Britain.
Denmark lets people seek removal of unauthorized AI content and compensation; the campaign has not secured comparable UK remedies.
The 28% scam-exposure figure and three-second cloning claim are campaign assertions, not independently established findings in the article.
Nicola Coughlan, Hugh Bonneville and Matt Lucas are among the supporters of Save Our Voices Now, a UK campaign seeking to stop AI systems from cloning real people’s voices without consent. About 80 people have signed its open letter calling for legislation to protect voice ownership.
The campaign is focused on AI voice cloning: systems that reproduce a real person’s voice and can generate speech from prompts. Its named supporters also include Luke Evans, Jen Brister, Siobhán McSweeney and Pearl Mackie, bringing performers behind a proposal meant to apply to everyone in Britain.
The response has two parts. The open letter calls for legislation protecting voice ownership, while a Gov.uk petition asks for statutory ownership of each person’s voice. Together, they frame unauthorized cloning as a question of legal control over identity, rather than only a matter for individual contracts.
About 80 people signed the open letter calling for legislation to protect voice ownership.
Save Our Voices Now claims that 28% of UK adults report being targeted by a voice-cloning scam.
Founder Peter Caulfield says a voice can be cloned in about three seconds with the right AI system. The campaign cites that claimed speed alongside its estimate that 28% of UK adults have been targeted by a voice-cloning scam, linking the ownership proposal to both creative misuse and fraud risk.
“My voice is unique, it’s mine, it’s part of my identity,” Bonneville said. “So is yours. That’s worth speaking up about.”
Denmark’s law reforms are giving citizens legal ownership of their face, body and voice. They allow people to seek removal of unauthorized AI content and compensation, offering a concrete example of identity rights paired with remedies after synthetic material appears.
Save Our Voices Now has made a defined ask: statutory voice ownership for everyone in Britain. Its support base and petition put that proposal into public view, but whether they lead to legislation remains unsettled.
