The figures strengthen industry leaders’ argument that AI is augmenting design work for now, while leaving the long-term effect on employment unresolved.

The UK design economy has expanded despite generative AI: Design Council-funded research reports 15% employment growth from 2020–25 and 2.27 million supported design jobs. Industry leaders expect AI to augment skilled workers, but acknowledge substitution is already happening in some tasks. The data shows no clear employment impact yet, while much of the economic baseline predates tools such as ChatGPT and Claude.
Design employment rose 15% between 2020 and 2025, according to Design Council-funded research.
The broader design economy generated £136.7 billion in gross value added, exceeding retail and accommodation and food services.
Leaders’ AI forecasts are expectations, not measured evidence about how individual design roles will change.
UK design employment rose 15% from 2020 to 2025, with construction, services and manufacturing supporting an estimated 2.27 million design jobs. For industry leaders confronting generative AI, the figures are evidence that demand for design skills has held up through 2025.
Design Council chief executive Mat Hunter said designers are using AI to add value and expects overall employment to keep growing. He also acknowledged that technological change can displace people by changing how work is done, making his employment view an expectation rather than a settled outcome.
The industry case does not deny that AI can replace some work. Deborah Dawton, chief executive of the Design Business Council, said AI is already being used “as a substitute” for work done by human designers. But she argued that skill, experience, empathy and deep sector knowledge protect designers operating at a high level.
Andrew Duff of the Society of Garden and Landscape Designers offered a more practical description: firms are more likely to treat AI as “the intern in the office” than as a replacement for skilled staff. Both assessments describe how leaders expect firms to deploy the tools, not a measured forecast for every design role.
Council-funded research estimated a 15% increase in design employment between 2020 and 2025.
The Design Council said the sector grew 40% from 2019 to the end of 2023, compared with 23% across the economy.
Construction, services and manufacturing support an estimated 2.27 million design jobs, according to Design Council-funded research.
The council said the UK design economy generated £136.7 billion in gross value added, more than retail’s £114 billion and accommodation and food services’ £70 billion. Its definition spans household products, fashion, buildings and transport, not design agencies alone.
The industry-size estimates predate dominant AI tools including ChatGPT and Claude. Employment data runs through the end of 2025 and indicates little effect so far on demand for design-skilled workers; it cannot settle the longer-term employment effect.
Hunter described skills shortages as a larger problem than AI after UK design and technology GCSE entries fell 68% over the decade to 2024. Dawton called for specialist teachers and equipment in schools to help build the next generation of designers.
The economic base is also uneven: the south-east accounted for £43.3 billion in design-related gross value added, compared with £3.1 billion in the north-east.
The leaders’ confidence sits against wider anxiety. A King’s Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Policy Institute study found that 57% of the public believe AI will cause widespread unemployment.
