The scientific case for the release is different from the online spectacle. A previously released female connectome gives researchers two adult fly nervous systems to compare at synaptic resolution. Google says the pairing can support studies of structural differences associated with courtship and aggression, as well as variation in regions that look similar across the two flies.

Researchers produced the map by using AI to stitch millions of two-dimensional electron-microscope images into three-dimensional neural structures and trace cells through the image stack. Human experts at Janelia then verified and annotated the reconstruction.
