Discord Rolls Out Global Age Estimates, Limiting Who Must Verify

An adult Discord user can now be shut out of age-restricted spaces without ever being asked for an ID or selfie. Discord is rolling out a revised age-check system globally this week that estimates age from account activity first. Anyone placed in the teen or unconfirmed group must confirm they are an adult to enter those spaces.

The account becomes the first age check

Discord sorts accounts into adult (18+), teen (13–17) and unconfirmed groups. Its model considers account age, connected communities, servers and games, and general activity levels. Discord says it does not examine messages, calls or other content to make the estimate. No single server determines a user’s group.

The rollout will take several days. Users can find their placement under User Settings > Account Status. An adult placement changes nothing; unconfirmed means the model lacks enough signals to decide. Neither an unconfirmed nor a teen placement stops people from messaging friends, joining voice calls or using unrestricted servers.

More than 90%Users not asked to confirm their age

Discord estimates that more than 90% of users will not be asked to confirm their age group. This is a forecast, not a measured rollout result.

What placement changes

Teen-group accounts cannot access age-restricted servers, channels or bot commands. Sensitive images are blurred or blocked; messages from non-friends go to a requests inbox. Users also get alerts about certain friend requests. Teen users’ full profiles and activity are visible only to friends and people in smaller shared servers. Unconfirmed users get similar protections, but their full profiles and activity remain visible to everyone in their shared servers.

More ways to correct a wrong call

Adults placed in the teen or unconfirmed group can confirm their age through Account Status if they want restricted access. Depending on their region and device, options include a credit card, an age range shared through Apple’s App Store or Google Play, an eligible Google Wallet ID pass, or a reusable AgeKey credential. ID scans and video selfies remain available, but are no longer the only routes.

These checks do not all share the same data. Discord says k-ID routes card details to Stripe for an adult-ownership check without Discord or k-ID seeing them. App-store sharing provides an age range rather than an exact birthdate. Discord says verification vendors send it an age-group signal, not users’ names, cards, IDs or face scans, and must delete uploaded data immediately after confirming the group.

The backlash behind the revision

Discord delayed its February plan, which relied on facial age estimation or ID scans, after users raised privacy concerns. The concern had a concrete backdrop: hackers stole government IDs belonging to 70,000 Discord users from a third-party age-verification service in 2025. Discord says it has retired the manual-review process involved in that breach.

Discord also cites expanding age-check requirements as a reason for its global approach. The remaining test is accuracy: the company acknowledges its model can put someone in the wrong group but gives no error rate in its rollout explanation. For those adults, an estimate meant to spare most users a verification request becomes the reason they need one.
