Dyson has launched the $499 CameraJet, an electric toothbrush with a 100,000-pixel macro-lens camera built into its brush head. The device is designed to turn images captured during brushing into detection of gaps between teeth, shifting part of the cleaning decision from the user to the brush.
The sensing loop inside the brush head
CameraJet captures and analyzes 28 images per second. A stroboscopic light illuminates the mouth so the camera can see, while Dyson says its machine-learning algorithm identifies and targets interdental gaps, the spaces between teeth.
That makes the camera part of the brushing system rather than a diagnostic add-on. Dyson describes an image-processing loop that finds a specific part of the mouth while the toothbrush is in use.
The model runs on the device, according to Dyson, and was trained on 470,000 dental images. Once it identifies a gap, the brush can shoot mouthrinse into it within 100 milliseconds. The design therefore combines visual detection with a physical response, rather than using the camera only to show the user what is happening.
Dyson also worked with the National University of Singapore to create synthetic plaque for testing the camera system. That detail points to a practical challenge of this kind of product: its vision system has to interpret a wet, enclosed environment while the brush is moving, not a static image taken outside the mouth.

Dyson supplied both figures, and the disclosed evidence does not establish how the brush performs over longer periods or against a premium electric toothbrush on the gum-health measure.
A hardware-heavy bet on automated brushing
Dyson says 661 engineers contributed to CameraJet. The company also says it spent six years developing the product and obtained 38 patents, indicating how much hardware and software it has put behind a routine consumer task.
The product’s central test is whether its camera, lighting, fluid delivery, connectivity and gap detection offer enough practical value to justify a premium-priced toothbrush system. Its connected design also introduces a question beyond cleaning performance: the device uses Wi-Fi and Bluetooth while capturing images inside the mouth, but its data-handling and security practices are not detailed here.
