Story brief
3 key pointsEpiq’s completed September 25 purchase of Canopy turns a longstanding breach-response partnership into an in-house product effort: Canopy’s engineers and cyber specialists will help build Epiq AI for Cyber. The strategic bet is tighter linkage between AI-assisted discovery of sensitive exposed data and Epiq’s response and notification operation, rather than a standalone review tool.

Canopy’s technology is planned for Epiq AI and Epiq Service Cloud, but Epiq has not provided a customer availability date.
Epiq is bringing a longtime breach-response partner in-house. On September 25, it announced the acquisition of Canopy, whose software searches exposed data for sensitive information and identifies affected people. Epiq plans to put the platform inside its AI products, pairing automated review with the cyber-response services it already provides.
From partner to in-house technology
Canopy was already a longstanding Epiq partner in responding to cyber incidents, according to Epiq’s Scott Berger, senior vice president of managed services and cyber solutions. The deal changes that relationship: Canopy’s technology and engineering talent are joining Epiq, rather than remaining with an outside partner.
Epiq says Canopy’s platform will be integrated into Epiq AI, its suite of AI tools, and made accessible through Epiq Service Cloud, its legal technology and services platform. That is the intended customer-facing change, not a claim that the integration is already available. Epiq did not disclose the acquisition price.
The review Canopy is built to speed up
After a breach, Canopy’s platform assesses exposed data, detects sensitive information and identifies affected individuals. Its Auto Review feature uses AI agents to automate the first pass through that data. Epiq says the feature lets teams move from narrowing down the material to quality control, rather than doing that initial review by hand.
The advertised automation covers first-level data mining review; Epiq’s own description still places quality control after that step. That distinction matters when the software is identifying people affected by exposed information. How reliably Auto Review performs its first pass remains an open question: Epiq has not disclosed an accuracy measure for it.
Epiq says it supports more than 1,800 cyber incidents annually.
Epiq says it can facilitate up to 2 million notifications per day.
People joining, integration still ahead
Canopy engineers and cyber-response specialists are joining Epiq to develop Epiq AI for Cyber. Former Canopy chief operating officer Adi Elliott is also joining as vice president of product management for cyber. Those hires give Epiq people who know the acquired system as it works to bring the technology into its own products.
Epiq’s operating figures describe its existing response work, not results from the combined product. The acquisition puts Canopy’s tools and specialists inside that operation, but Epiq has not specified when customers will get the planned integration. For now, the purchase is complete; the proposed change to the customer workflow is still ahead.
