Google Research and Cathay Pacific are scaling an Asia-Pacific trial that gives flight crews AI-based forecasts of contrail-forming airspace. More than 80 flights followed avoidance routes in the first phase, and Google’s satellite-image analysis estimated a roughly 40% reduction in contrail warming impact on those flights.
The project targets a climate effect that can look cosmetic from the ground. Contrails are white streaks that form when aircraft fly through cold, humid air. While many disappear quickly, some persist and spread into cloud-like formations that trap heat. Google puts their contribution at roughly one-third of aviation’s total climate impact.
Forecasts reach the flight deck
Google’s system combines AI predictions, satellite imagery and weather intelligence to identify likely contrail-forming zones before departure. Dispatchers and pilots can then plan slight altitude shifts around those areas. Cathay Pacific sends dynamic forecasts to crews through in-flight Wi-Fi and its proprietary Electronic Flight Folder.

The unresolved question is whether forecast-led altitude changes can produce useful reductions across that wider mix of routes and conditions.
