Announced October 1, Google’s Canadian 25th-anniversary package pairs free course access with hands-on business-adoption support, aiming to move AI use from personal tasks toward workplace deployment. The reach figures are commitments—up to 100,000 scholarships and a program intended to serve more than 10,000 businesses—not completed training or measured adoption. For businesses, the distinction is practical: individuals get course access through YMCA Canada, while a CAD 2.7 million Google.org grant funds tiered implementation assistance through the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.
The scholarships include the Google AI Professional Certificate and Google AI Essentials, expanding Google’s previously committed no-cost training access tenfold.
The Chamber’s AI Adoption Program is designed with three support levels for businesses at different stages of readiness.
Public First estimates generative AI could add CAD 230 billion to Canada’s economy and save the average worker 175 hours annually; these are forecasts, not program results.
Google is promising two new routes from personal AI use to workplace skills in Canada, but the numbers describe intended reach, not completed training. On October 1, the company committed up to 100,000 AI-training scholarships through YMCA Canada and more than CAD 2.7 million for a Canadian Chamber of Commerce program intended to reach over 10,000 small and medium-sized businesses.
The commitments are coordinated parts of Google Canada’s 25th-anniversary announcement. They address different audiences: people seeking no-cost access to Google’s AI courses, and businesses seeking help moving from awareness to implementation. Google is using the YMCA and chamber networks to deliver those offers rather than distributing both through a single program.
Google’s stated reason for the push is a gap between everyday use and work. The company says almost 90% of current conversational AI use in Canada is for personal and household tasks, even though Canada ranks in the top 20% globally for adoption per person.
Grow with Google will partner with YMCA Canada to distribute the scholarships through YMCAs across the country. The offer includes the Google AI Professional Certificate and Google AI Essentials. Google describes it as its largest Canadian Grow with Google partnership and a tenfold expansion of previously committed no-cost access to its AI-skills training.
The business commitment comes from Google.org. Its grant will help the Canadian Chamber of Commerce deliver a new national AI Adoption Program through the chamber’s network. Unlike the scholarship offer’s focus on course access, this program is designed around businesses at different stages of readiness, with three levels of support intended to move them toward implementation.
The anniversary report also takes a longer view than Google’s usual annual economic assessment. Google says its products and services generated more than CAD 550 billion in economic activity for Canadian businesses, creators and developers over 25 years. It separately cites an estimated CAD 410 billion in productivity improvements from tools such as Search and Workspace.
Google says it has helped more than one million Canadians build digital and AI skills since 2017.
The commitments also build on Google.org’s $13 million AI Opportunity Fund. Google says the fund supported workforce-readiness and upskilling programs at the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute and Skills for Change, Toronto Public Library’s AI Learning Circles, and an AI-adoption toolkit for Indigenous communities from the First Nations Technology Council. The anniversary package adds two national delivery partners to this work.
