Google is narrowing model access in Gemini Apps for personal accounts, without removing Pro from the service. Free users move to Flash-Lite from October 9, while Google AI Plus subscribers lose Gemini Pro later in October on schedules communicated individually by email; Plus retains Flash, Flash-Lite and its storage benefits. Subscribers who need Pro will have to use Google AI Pro or Ultra, making the change a shift in which plans include the model rather than a shutdown of it.
Google’s notice sets October 9 as the start date for free accounts, not a universal cutoff for Plus subscribers.
Google AI Pro and AI Ultra are unaffected and continue to include Gemini Pro, Flash and Flash-Lite.
An XDA writer said losing Pro could prompt him to consider rival services; that is one subscriber’s reaction, not evidence of broader churn.
Google is removing model choices from Gemini’s two lowest tiers this month. Free users will lose Flash starting October 9, 2026, leaving them with Flash-Lite. Google AI Plus subscribers will lose Pro later in October but retain Flash and Flash-Lite. The change reduces what users can access without moving to a higher subscription tier.
Google’s Changes to Gemini model access and limits page says the October changes apply to Gemini Apps used with personal accounts. October 9 is the starting date for users without an AI subscription, rather than a single deadline for everyone affected.
Plus subscribers should receive an email explaining when their access changes take effect. Google’s notice does not give that group one shared cutoff date. For someone using Pro through Plus, the email is therefore the relevant notice—not the October 9 date attached to free accounts.
XDA writer Simon Batt described encountering the change directly in Gemini on the web. A notification warned that his Pro access would end in the coming weeks and linked to Google’s help page. His October 3 account details the models that will remain available under each plan.
The Plus subscription is not disappearing. Subscribers retain its storage benefits as well as the two remaining Gemini models, according to Batt. The distinction matters when weighing the package: losing a model does not mean losing every benefit attached to the subscription.
Batt’s reaction illustrates the other side of that calculation. He said Pro access was a major reason he had kept Plus and that he was considering rival services after seeing the restriction. That is one subscriber’s response, not evidence of how other customers will react.
Google AI Pro and AI Ultra are unaffected by this model-access change and retain Pro, alongside Flash and Flash-Lite. Despite the similar names, Google AI Pro is a subscription plan; Gemini Pro is the model being removed from Plus. The restriction concerns which plan can access that model, not its withdrawal from Gemini altogether.
