Google Adds Election Information to Gemini and AI Search for 2026 Midterms

Google is rolling out election-information tools across Search, AI Mode, AI Overviews and the Gemini app ahead of the 2026 U.S. midterms. The package puts official voting details inside Google’s AI interfaces while adding measures aimed at helping users identify AI-generated campaign media.

The tools are designed to show polling locations, registration deadlines and other official election data. Google says it will draw that information from state and local governments and Democracy Works, with real-time voting results supplied by The Associated Press.

Checking the material around those answers

Google is also directing users to its content-provenance tools. It says SynthID places imperceptible watermarks in AI-generated media that can be checked through Gemini, Search and Chrome. The company supports C2PA Content Credentials and offers Backstory, a tool for examining a piece of content’s origin and editing history.

Labels are paired with platform rules

YouTube requires creators to disclose AI-generated content and has introduced automatic AI labels. Political advertisers must complete election-ad verification, disclose synthetic or digitally altered content, include paid-for-by notices and appear in Google’s public Political Advertising Transparency Report.

Google and YouTube also prohibit content that misleads voters about how, when or where to vote. Google says enforcement can range from restricting features to ending an account, while its Trust & Safety and Threat Intelligence teams work to detect and disrupt election-targeted cyberattacks and influence operations.

Support extends beyond Google’s products

Free support for election participants

• Advanced Protection Program, Project Shield and Fairwind are available at no cost to election and government officials, campaigns and journalists.
• Project Shield protects election websites from denial-of-service attacks and legitimate traffic surges.
• Candidates and journalists can request removal of AI imagery featuring their likeness on YouTube, plus certain personal information from Search.

Google and partners including Defending Digital Campaigns also offer campaigns and election officials training in online security, responsible AI use and YouTube verification. The next test is how these information, labeling and enforcement measures operate as voters encounter election material across Google’s services.
