The money extends an existing nationwide training program through local support, community-college work and research on what helps faculty use AI effectively.

The $4 million grant expands Google’s existing AI Educator Series from a course offering into a locally delivered support program. Digital Promise will work with states, districts, community-college systems, and educator networks to help teachers and faculty apply AI in real institutional settings. The initiative targets the roughly 6 million U.S. K–12 teachers and higher-education faculty, but the announcement reports no adoption or learning outcomes yet.
Digital Promise will tailor training with state agencies, districts, and community-college systems instead of relying only on a national course catalog.
The free Google AI Educator Series offers more than 20 short, non-sequential sessions and digital badges through Google’s Learning Center.
Digital Promise plans to publish a free higher-education AI adoption guide after two years of faculty-use research.
Google.org has committed $4 million to Digital Promise to extend free, practical AI training for U.S. teachers and faculty. The new funding adds local training models, educator networks and college-faculty research to a program Google says is designed to reach all 6 million K-12 teachers and higher-education faculty in the country.
The commitment, announced at a United Nations General Assembly-related event in New York, is not a new training course. It is an expansion layer for the Google AI Educator Series, a free program built with ISTE around foundational AI skills, instructional judgment and practical work such as lesson planning and productivity.
That distinction matters. Google’s original promise was national access; Digital Promise is being funded to help schools and colleges make that access usable through tailored support rather than a one-size-fits-all course catalog. The training remains available through the Google for Education Learning Center, where participants can earn digital badges.
Digital Promise will work with state education agencies and school districts on tailored training, while supporting teacher networks intended to build lasting AI skills. It will also partner with community-college systems to help instructors apply AI in both daily work and teaching.
The series itself predates this grant. Google and ISTE+ASCD announced a three-year partnership in February to provide free AI literacy training nationwide, then launched its first wave of more than 20 sessions in May. Google described the lessons as short, non-sequential modules that can also be combined into longer workshops.
The grant’s research component gives the expansion a longer horizon. Over the next two years, Digital Promise plans to examine how college faculty use AI effectively, then publish a free guide for higher-education institutions. That makes the project partly a training rollout and partly an effort to develop evidence for how institutions can adopt AI thoughtfully.
The current announcement lays out resources and intended delivery channels, not results from the expansion. Its practical test will be whether district partnerships, peer networks and community-college support help educators translate short, tool-agnostic lessons into sound decisions in classrooms and faculty work.
