Google Translate Adds iPhone Earpiece Audio and Android Background Sessions

Google Translate is making live audio translation less tied to an open app or a pair of headphones, but the new conveniences are split by phone platform. iPhone users can now hear translated audio through the handset’s earpiece without headphones, while Android users can keep a session running after switching apps or locking the screen. Google says the equivalent iOS background support is coming soon.

The release applies to Live Translate, Google Translate’s near-real-time audio translation feature for more than 70 languages. On Android, translations can now continue in the background during other phone use. On iOS, a person without headphones can hold the phone to an ear and hear the translated audio through its earpiece.

Google said more than one-third of Live Translate sessions last longer than five minutes. That company-supplied figure helps explain the Android change: a user can leave Translate open for an extended conversation or listening task without keeping the app in the foreground or the display awake.

That changes the operating constraint rather than the language coverage or the underlying translation mode. The background option is intended for longer sessions in which a person needs to multitask or lock the phone; Google has not described a comparable iOS capability as available now.

The iOS change builds on a March rollout, when Google announced Live Translate with headphones for iOS. Google said users could open the Translate app, select Live Translate and connect headphones; it also expanded that version to additional countries for both iOS and Android users.

The new earpiece option removes that headphone step for iOS users worldwide. Google points to situations where carrying headphones may be inconvenient, including listening to announcements at noisy airports or following a crowded tour. Those are examples from the company, not a stated guarantee about translation quality in those settings.

The earpiece option was already available on Android before this release, so the iOS change closes that listening gap. The new background mode, however, currently remains Android-only. iPhone users can now listen without an accessory, but cannot yet keep Live Translate running while the app is backgrounded or the screen is locked.

Google has said only that iOS background support is coming soon and has not supplied a release date. The immediate result is two different mobile workflows: Android is better suited to uninterrupted, longer listening sessions, while iOS now offers a more discreet way to hear translations when headphones are unavailable.
