IBM and Arm Design Future Z Processor to Run Arm-Native Linux Alongside z/OS

IBM and Arm have described a dual-architecture processor for future IBM Z and LinuxONE systems. It is designed to let Arm-native Linux run beside z/OS and existing Linux applications within the same enterprise system.

The key technical choice is that each processor core is designed to natively execute both IBM and Arm instructions. Arm describes that as a different model from placing Arm in a separate subsystem: IBM and Arm software environments are intended to coexist in one enterprise system.

The intended software arrangement is specific: Arm-native Linux environments would operate alongside z/OS and existing Linux applications. Arm says the design would bring Arm software directly into IBM enterprise systems, allowing customers to retain their existing software environments rather than move critical workloads elsewhere.

Arm frames the design around cloud and AI software increasingly created or optimized for its architecture. The company says its software ecosystem has more than 22 million developers worldwide. For IBM Z and LinuxONE customers, the pitch is access to that Arm-native software in systems built for demanding enterprise workloads.

Arm says workloads using the planned arrangement would receive IBM’s enterprise-grade security and resilience. It identifies financial services as a relevant setting because security, availability and operational continuity are essential. That makes the proposal less about replacing established enterprise environments than extending what they are designed to run.

The announcement establishes a processor design for future systems, not an available product. Arm did not provide an availability date or performance figures, leaving the timing and operating results of the planned processor unresolved.
