iManage Connects ChatGPT Enterprise to Governed Document Work

iManage has announced a ChatGPT Enterprise integration that lets authorized users search, review, organize and save governed iManage content without leaving the AI workspace. The key promise is that those actions happen while existing permissions, ethical walls, audit trails and document version history remain intact.

That makes the connection more than a document-search tool. A worker can find material they are permitted to see, read it in ChatGPT Enterprise, place content in the appropriate iManage location and save a draft or revision back as a new version. iManage says the original document and its full version history are retained.

A connection built around existing boundaries

Customers enable the plug-in from within ChatGPT Enterprise rather than manually setting up a connection, according to iManage. Once enabled, it limits search to content a user is authorized to access. That design is aimed at organizations where a useful document may also carry restrictions on who can see it or which matter it belongs to.

Under the integration is iManage Context Fabric, which the company says connects signals from an organization’s content and activity data. Instead of treating a prior agreement or piece of correspondence as an isolated file, iManage says models in ChatGPT Enterprise can use that connected context to surface related work and prior matters.

Retrieval, review and write-back in one workflow

iManage describes a contract-review scenario in which a lawyer finds the latest agreement, related correspondence and relevant amendments stored in iManage, reviews them in one workflow, then saves updated work to the appropriate workspace. The example illustrates why write-back changes the stakes: the AI workspace can now feed work product into the record system, not just draw material from it.

A more specific step in iManage’s open-platform strategy

The newly announced connection follows iManage’s August description of a next-generation platform built around an open ecosystem of AI tools, including ChatGPT Enterprise. That earlier announcement said iManage’s MCP Server, a connector for compatible AI applications, could provide governed access to organizational knowledge and support actions such as filing, moving and linking documents.

This integration gives that strategy a named ChatGPT Enterprise workflow. iManage says the result will be more relevant and verifiable responses because they are grounded in an organization’s institutional knowledge and prior work product.

The governance features address one part of enterprise adoption: who can access sensitive material and how changes are recorded. A separate operational question remains for organizations using the tool: when should AI-assisted revisions be allowed back into the governed record, and what review should come first? The product announcement establishes the controls iManage says travel with the work; it does not settle how each firm will use them.
