Instinct Raises $250M at $2.5B for a Private-Beta Agent With Deep Access

Instinct has raised $250 million in a Series B that values the personal AI-assistant startup at $2.5 billion and brings its total funding to $350 million. The round puts a high price on an agent meant to organize a user’s life through connected apps and devices, before it has moved beyond private beta.

A personal agent needs a route into daily work

Instinct connects to users’ apps and devices, and users can reach it through text messages and calls. It is designed to do more than answer questions: the assistant can connect to email, messaging, location, screen and audio data, then carry out tasks such as booking travel, making reservations, managing an inbox and completing purchases.

The access that enables the product

• Connected email and messaging can give the assistant material to organize and act on.
• Location, screen and audio data extend the assistant’s view beyond a conventional chat window.

The trust question sits inside the interface

That operating model has already drawn online privacy concerns about the permissions the app requires and its terms of use. Revised terms provide a model-training opt-out and a way to request deletion of indexed data from connected services. The opt-out applies going forward, while indexed data can remain after a service is disconnected unless a user separately requests deletion.

A large valuation, with a narrow first audience

The company, operated by Spear Street Technology and led by founder Noah Shinn, is still in private beta. Its early access has been available by invitation from venture-capital insiders, according to Forbes. The financing therefore reflects investor confidence in a product whose broader test is whether people will grant it the permissions required to act across their accounts and devices.
