Job Seeker Sends ChatGPT to AI Recruiter After Five Interviews Without Follow-Up

After five AI interviews ended without a human response or even an automated rejection, a job seeker identified only as Christopher put ChatGPT Voice on a call with Riley, an AI recruiter used by Everforth Apex Systems. The two systems spoke for 10 minutes, putting the candidate and employer automation on the same call.

Christopher’s frustration followed a long search. He said he applied for roughly 700 jobs in six months and heard nothing from most employers. His first Riley interview covered work authorization and professional background; across five Riley interviews, he received neither recruiter follow-up nor an automated rejection.

The fifth call changed the candidate’s response

For the next call, Christopher entered a short background profile into ChatGPT Voice and had it present itself as him. He says the exchange with Riley ran for 10 minutes. At one point, the systems fell into a loop while trying to settle a potential start date around standard onboarding and background checks.

Riley again said a recruiter would make contact if Christopher met the qualifications. Christopher says that contact never came. Everforth Apex Systems did not respond to WIRED’s request for comment about the episode.

A tailored fictional candidate got the same result

Christopher then ran a second test. He created a fictional applicant, Don Dickner, whose résumé was built from qualifications in an open Everforth Apex posting. Riley immediately contacted that candidate, and ChatGPT handled a 23-minute interview, offering answers and anecdotes for each qualification. No follow-up arrived afterward.

The test does not establish how often employers accept AI-generated candidates or how Everforth Apex evaluates calls. It is one applicant’s reported experiment with one recruiting system. It does show that a tailored synthetic candidate could complete the screening conversation without producing a visible next step.

Detection tools do not answer the feedback problem

Voice AI has its own technical hurdles. Ophir Samson, Greenhouse’s head of voice AI, said accents, filler words and avoiding interruptions can trip up interview agents. Meanwhile, recruitment startup Ribbon offers tools meant to identify overly scripted, AI-assisted or coached responses. Whether that kind of verification changes the lack of feedback that prompted Christopher’s experiment remains unresolved.
