John Lewis Launches Gift List to Reach Shoppers Using AI Search
The retailer is pairing a celebrity interview series with social-media cutdowns as more customers use AI language models to find products. The strategy creates more material for digital discovery, but does not show how any particular chatbot will rank it.

The retailer says customers using AI language models for product discovery rose from 0.3% to 2.5% in a year, though that remains a small share and no chatbot placement is guaranteed. John Lewis has launched Gift List, a six-episode video podcast hosted by Angela Scanlon, as part of an effort to make its products more visible in chatbots and AI search results. Broadcaster Louis Theroux is the first guest.
The format is familiar: guests discuss memorable gifts they have given and received. Its delivery is wider than a single show. Episodes will arrive every three weeks on YouTube, johnlewis.com, Spotify and Apple Podcasts, with shorter versions distributed through social channels.
A small, faster-growing discovery channel
Peter Ruis, John Lewis’s outgoing managing director, said the share of its customers searching for products through AI large language models such as ChatGPT rose from 0.3% a year earlier to 2.5%. It remains a minority of customers, but the reported increase is the company’s rationale for investing in a larger stream of searchable video and social material.
The show feeds a broader studio
Gift List is produced from The Box Studio, a new content-creation space at John Lewis’s Oxford Street flagship. John Lewis says the studio will also produce product reviews, reactions to trends, seasonal highlights and creator takeovers for its social channels. That makes the podcast one format within a continuing content operation, rather than the entire AI-search effort.
The initial run
- Six episodes are scheduled through Christmas, with a different guest in each installment.
- More episodes are planned if the series performs well.
- John Lewis said the initiative follows sister chain Waitrose’s Dish podcast.
A visibility goal, not a ranking guarantee
The bet rests on a changing retail-discovery system. AI language models tend to prioritize third-party advice and live content when generating responses, prompting retailers to revise their marketing plans. Gift List instead gives John Lewis branded interviews and social clips to distribute. The launch is a visibility strategy, not evidence that the show will appear in a particular chatbot’s product recommendations.
