Lightcast’s hiring data points to a fast-growing implementation layer around enterprise AI: U.S. ads for forward-deployed engineers rose from fewer than 200 in 2023 to more than 7,300 in January–September 2026. Consulting firms, not just AI vendors, are driving recruitment, while advertised pay signals competition for people who can bridge technical deployments and customer operations. The figures count postings, not filled jobs or realized compensation; software-engineering overlap may widen the candidate pool, but customer judgment and organizational navigation remain harder-to-teach requirements.
Deloitte led the top advertisers with 872 postings, followed by Accenture with 688, Google with 499, and KPMG with 447.
Median advertised pay was $195,456, up 40% from 2023 and more than three times the median across all U.S. job postings.
Lightcast research head Elena Magrini said FDE roles share roughly half their skills with software engineering, creating a potential route for recruiting.
Businesses are advertising thousands of jobs for engineers who can turn AI experiments into working systems. Lightcast counted more than 7,300 U.S. forward-deployed-engineer postings in the first nine months of 2026, according to CNBC’s October 15 report. Median advertised pay reached $195,456, putting a substantial price on the skills needed to make those deployments work.
Forward-deployed engineers, often shortened to FDEs, work directly with customers rather than only building software at a distance. Their assignment combines AI and software expertise with an understanding of how a business operates. They help move projects through existing technology, security requirements and organizational obstacles.
The demand is not confined to companies developing AI models. Three of the four leading advertisers were consultancies, with Google the only technology company in that group.
Pay offers provide another measure of competition. The median advertised FDE salary was 40% higher than in 2023 and more than three times the median across all U.S. job postings. These figures describe recruitment: the openings are not completed hires, and advertised salaries are not workers’ actual earnings.
Elena Magrini, Lightcast’s head of global research, told CNBC that rising wages suggest employers are competing for a limited pool of talent.
Magrini also identified a possible source of recruits: the FDE role shares roughly half its skills with software engineering. That overlap, she said, creates an opportunity to draw from a much broader talent pool.
The harder part may be customer-facing judgment. Val Henderson, CEO of consulting partner Caylent, told CNBC that understanding customers and navigating organizational dynamics are particularly difficult to teach. Engineers must also exercise judgment when projects hit unexpected problems. Her assessment puts a practical constraint beside the skills overlap: technical experience matters, but the job also requires working through people and business decisions.
