Marvell is reportedly in advanced talks to buy Nvidia-backed optics supplier Lumentum
Bloomberg says an announcement could come next week. The target already has multiyear Nvidia agreements covering purchases, manufacturing capacity and optical technology.
Bloomberg reported Oct. 29 that Marvell is in advanced, unconfirmed talks to acquire Lumentum, with an announcement possible as soon as next week. Lumentum makes lasers, photonic integrated circuits and transceivers used in AI data-center links, positioning a potential purchase as an expansion into optical connectivity. The deal would also bring Lumentum’s existing Nvidia agreements for optics research, purchases and future component capacity into the picture; neither company has confirmed the negotiations.

Bloomberg put Lumentum’s market value at about $83 billion and Marvell’s at around $221 billion; those figures are not an agreed purchase price.
02
Nvidia announced a multiyear, nonexclusive arrangement with Lumentum on March 2, including a $2 billion investment to support research, capacity and a new U.S. manufacturing facility.

The Nvidia agreement also includes a multibillion-dollar purchase commitment and future capacity access for advanced laser components.
Marvell is in advanced talks to acquire Lumentum, Bloomberg News reported on October 29, potentially bringing an Nvidia-backed supplier of AI data-center optics under the chipmaker’s ownership. People familiar with the private discussions said a transaction could be announced as soon as next week. Neither company has publicly confirmed the talks.
The companies’ stock-market values show the scale of the potential transaction. Those are market valuations, not an agreed purchase price, and should not be read as the terms of a deal.

The connections between AI processors
Lumentum supplies components that help move data between graphics processors in AI data centers. Its products include lasers, photonic integrated circuits and high-speed transceivers. The company’s own description also spans optical modules and subsystems for data-center connectivity, telecommunications and other applications.
Marvell and Lumentum already have a technical relationship. At the OFC 2026 optical-industry conference, they demonstrated Marvell optical signal-processing chips working with Lumentum’s R300 optical circuit switching platform, according to Startup Fortune. The demonstration targeted lower latency and power use in AI networking.
Nvidia’s relationship goes beyond an investment
A purchase would also bring Lumentum’s existing Nvidia relationship into the picture. On March 2, Nvidia announced multiyear strategic agreements covering advanced optics research and development for future AI infrastructure. The official announcement describes a nonexclusive agreement: Nvidia’s financial backing sits alongside commercial commitments, rather than replacing them.
Three parts of the Nvidia arrangement
Investment: Nvidia said it would invest $2 billion to support Lumentum’s research, future capacity and operations, including a new U.S. manufacturing facility.
Purchases: The agreement included a multibillion-dollar Nvidia purchase commitment, making the relationship commercial as well as financial.
Supply access: Nvidia also secured future capacity access rights for advanced laser components, tying the agreement to manufacturing availability.
