Meridian by Pilot has launched a free connector that lets AI assistants write to Xero books, not just read reports. Through a hosted MCP server, users can connect Claude, Cowork, ChatGPT, or Codex to selected Xero organizations without installing anything, creating a developer account, or opening a Meridian account. The important change is permission. Each connected company can be set to read-only or read-write access. With read-write enabled, an agent can create or modify supported records, including journal entries, invoices, bills, payments, purchases, transfers, customers, vendors, items, and attachments. It can also run reports and inspect the transactions behind them. Multiple Xero companies can connect to the same assistant, while keeping their access settings separate, including for intercompany work. That makes this more than a reporting add-on, but it is deliberately not a full accounting operations system. Only one connector user can access a given client organization. Meridian by Pilot has launched a free Xero Connector that lets Claude, Cowork, ChatGPT and Codex read from and perform supported work in Xero. The change gives AI assistants a route to create or modify selected accounting records rather than merely discuss the numbers.

The product is a hosted MCP server. MCP, or Model Context Protocol, is a standard for connecting an AI agent to an outside system and its available tools. Users sign in with Xero, choose the organizations to connect, then attach the server to a supported assistant. Meridian says there is nothing to install and no developer account to create.

The connector is free and does not require a Meridian account. It is available to people with a Xero account and Claude, Cowork, ChatGPT or Codex, giving them a lower-friction way to try agent-assisted work inside their ledger.

From reports to underlying transactions

Meridian’s stated scope goes beyond a reporting add-on. An agent can run reports, inspect the transaction-level data behind them, and work with customers, vendors, accounts, items and attachments. Those omissions keep the connector distinct from a system designed to coordinate team-based accounting work.

Meridian recommends a gradual start: read data from books a user knows well, try a bounded task, then review a manual journal before it posts. The immediate question for Xero users is not simply whether an agent can access the books, but which tasks warrant authority to change them.
