Meta has introduced a way for AI coding agents to set up and manage WhatsApp Business messaging through chat. Instead of moving between Meta’s Developer Console, Business Manager, API references, and an editor, a business can describe what it needs and let a connected agent carry out supported tasks. The connection is called WhatsApp Business Tools MCP. MCP stands for Model Context Protocol: a server that links an AI agent directly to the WhatsApp Business Platform. Meta says Claude, Cursor, Codex, and ChatGPT can use it. The scope goes beyond opening an account. An agent can add and verify a phone number, register Cloud API access, check Terms of Service status, create or edit messaging templates from a business description, and test messages and webhooks. It can also monitor payment-method problems and Business Verification issues. That makes this less about launching a new messaging channel than shortening the operational path to activate and maintain one. There is an important boundary, though. The tool does not eliminate Meta’s underlying setup requirements. And Meta separates WhatsApp-specific operations from the work of finding endpoints, searching documentation, and diagnosing errors. Those tasks can involve a separate Meta Social Technologies MCP. So the key thing to watch is how much of the real setup an agent can complete reliably through conversation, versus how often businesses still have to drop back into Meta’s broader tools and troubleshooting systems.

Story brief

3 key points

Meta is turning WhatsApp Business activation into an agent-operated workflow via WhatsApp Business Tools MCP, allowing compatible coding agents to execute configuration and maintenance tasks from chat. The server covers account and phone verification, Cloud API registration, templates, message and webhook tests, and checks for payment or Business Verification problems. It does not eliminate Meta’s underlying setup...

Supported agents include Claude, Cursor, Codex and ChatGPT.

  2. 02

The workflow spans Developer Console, Business Manager, API references and editor tasks through one agent connection.

Meta separates WhatsApp operations from endpoint discovery, documentation search and error diagnosis handled by Meta Social Technologies MCP.

Meta has introduced a tool that lets AI coding agents set up and manage WhatsApp Business messaging through chat instructions. The change hands agents work that previously sent developers across several Meta interfaces, including account setup, Cloud API registration and testing.

From a chain of consoles to one agent connection

The product is called WhatsApp Business Tools MCP. MCP, short for Model Context Protocol, is a server that directly connects an AI coding agent to the WhatsApp Business Platform. Meta says agents including Claude, Cursor, Codex and ChatGPT can use it to carry out setup tasks after a business describes what it needs in a conversation.

Before this release, developers working on the service had to move among the Developer Console, Meta’s Business Manager, API reference and their editor. The new route does not remove the underlying configuration work; it changes the interface for directing it, from navigating separate tools to asking an agent in plain language.

Setup is only one part of the job

Meta’s announced scope reaches beyond creating an account. An agent can add and verify a phone number, register the business for Cloud API access and check its Terms of Service status. Those are the operational steps that make a WhatsApp Business messaging connection usable in the first place.

Tasks Meta says an agent can handle

  • Create a WhatsApp Business account and add or verify its phone number.
  • Register Cloud API access and check Terms of Service status.
  • Create or edit messaging templates from a business’s description.
  • Test messages and webhooks, then monitor payment-method and Business Verification issues.

A setup agent alongside a troubleshooting agent

The release also draws a line between performing WhatsApp-specific work and finding the information needed to resolve problems. Meta says its existing Meta Social Technologies MCP can be used during setup to discover API endpoints, search documentation and troubleshoot errors. The WhatsApp tool is designed for the business-messaging workflow; the companion server is positioned as support for navigating Meta’s wider technical materials.

That distinction is the practical test for the release. Meta is offering agents a path to perform routine configuration and to surface failures that might otherwise go unnoticed, while retaining separate tooling for endpoint discovery, documentation search and error diagnosis. For businesses, the appeal is less a new messaging channel than a shorter route through the work required to activate and maintain one.
