Meta Offers Free AI Glasses and Training to More Than 130,000 Blind Veterans

Meta has begun offering free Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses to more than 130,000 legally blind veterans in the United States, pairing the devices with hands-on training. The program is designed to make functions such as reading documents and identifying objects available in daily life.

The initiative kicked off in Richmond, Virginia, on Friday morning. Meta partnered with Tech for Troops and other organizations there to distribute the glasses and train veterans, while the Blinded Veterans Association is participating in the nationwide effort for visually impaired veterans.

Getting the glasses to recipients

Eligible veterans can request a free pair through bva.org/glasses. The program’s distribution model goes beyond shipping hardware: partners are offering instruction intended to help recipients learn the technology as they receive it.

More than 130,000Planned recipients

Meta is providing free Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses to more than 130,000 legally blind veterans in the United States.

What the glasses are meant to do

The glasses can help users read documents, identify objects, describe surroundings and navigate locations. Meta product strategy policy manager Katie Watson Jordan gave two concrete examples: distinguishing canned goods in a grocery store and getting information to navigate an airport.

Early distributions illustrate the intended uses. At VFW Post 6731 in D’Iberville, Mississippi, veterans received free pairs, including former Navy Senior Chief Thomas Goldberg. Goldberg said he expected to use the glasses to have documents read aloud and to ask about people and activity around him, including what his grandchildren were doing.

The outcome remains a recipient test

Blinded Veterans Association leaders describe the partnership as a way to improve quality of life and independence. They also hope the glasses encourage veterans to explore more, take part in rehabilitation and reconnect with friends. Those are intended benefits, rather than measured long-term outcomes from the program.
