Meta’s AI app, Muse, reached No. 1 on both the U.S. Apple App Store and Google Play within 12 days of launch. Sensor Tower now estimates more than 3.4 million downloads through Thursday, but there’s no single agreed count: Apptopia puts it at 4.3 million, while Appfigures estimates roughly 2.3 million. Muse launched September 8 in the U.S. and Canada, and hit Apple’s top spot September 18, then Google Play’s the next day. Those rankings show a fast start, not whether users stick around. Meta has also given Muse unusually prominent distribution. Sensor Tower data indicates the company began promoting the app across its own services the day after launch. Within 10 days, Muse received most of Meta’s in-house ad promotions, ahead of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. TechCrunch reported that Muse ads made up 6% of ad impressions in its launch-period measurement. But an impression means someone saw an ad; it doesn’t show that the ad drove an install. The estimates can’t tell how much growth came from promotion versus people seeking out the app. After Meta Connect, daily active users rose 27% on one Wednesday. That’s a one-day usage change, not proof the conference caused it or that engagement will last. Meta says access through its AI glasses is coming in the next few months. The key test is whether people keep returning once the launch push fades—and whether those announced additions give them a reason.

Story brief

3 key points

Meta’s Muse is showing both the advantage and the measurement problem of a platform-backed launch: Sensor Tower says Meta began promoting it across its services a day after its Sept. 8 debut, while third-party install estimates range from 2.3 million to 4.3 million. Daily active users rose 27% on the Wednesday after Meta Connect, but neither that bump nor ad impressions establish what drove installs or retention....

  1. 01

Muse launched Sept. 8 in the U.S. and Canada, reached No. 1 on Apple’s U.S. App Store Sept. 18, and topped Google Play the following day.

  2. 02

Sensor Tower’s estimate—more than 3.4 million through Thursday—may lag; Apptopia estimated 4.3 million and Appfigures roughly 2.3 million.

  3. 03

Sensor Tower data shows Muse received most of Meta’s in-house ad promotions within 10 days; TechCrunch reported ads made up 6% of impressions in its launch-period measure.

Meta’s Muse has moved from a new AI app to the top of both major U.S. app-store charts in under two weeks. Sensor Tower now estimates more than 3.4 million downloads, while other firms’ counts differ sharply. The growth is clear; how much comes from Meta’s promotion, rather than people seeking out Muse themselves, is not.

A fast climb, counted three ways

Muse launched on September 8 and was available only in the U.S. and Canada as of Friday. It reached No. 1 on Apple’s U.S. App Store on September 18, then topped Google Play the next day. It still held both positions when TechCrunch published its Friday account. Rankings capture a burst of interest, though they do not show how many people keep using the app.

The install totals are estimates, not a single agreed count. Sensor Tower’s figure of more than 3.4 million was current through Thursday and may lag actual downloads. Apptopia put the total at 4.3 million; Appfigures estimated roughly 2.3 million as of Thursday. That spread makes any one figure a poor substitute for a verified tally, but all three point to millions of installs.

Meta gives Muse space on its own screens

Meta can put Muse in front of people who already use Facebook and Instagram. Sensor Tower’s data indicates the company began running promotions for Muse across its own properties on September 9, one day after launch. Within 10 days, Muse received the majority of those in-house ad promotions, ahead of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. That gives the app a distribution channel other newcomers may struggle to match.

Meta also advertised Muse beyond its services, including on Reddit, TikTok and YouTube. By September 22, Sensor Tower ranked it among the top 10 brands for ad spending. Yet the figures do not assign downloads to any particular campaign. TechCrunch says Muse promotions accounted for 6% of ad impressions in its launch-through-September-19 measure. An impression records exposure to an ad, not whether that exposure led to an install.

A usage bump after Connect

Meta used its Connect conference to show where Muse could go next. The company described a live video avatar, an email address for assigning tasks, more connections to outside services and access through its AI glasses. Meta says glasses access is coming in the next few months. These additions could give existing users more reasons to return, but announcements are not the same as features people can use today.

Sensor Tower measured a 27% rise in Muse’s daily active users on the Wednesday after Connect ended. That is a usage signal, distinct from an install count. It does not isolate the conference’s effect from ongoing promotion or other reasons people opened the app. Nor does a one-day increase show whether the new audience will stick around.

The next test is different from climbing a chart. Meta has already secured prominent placement for Muse and has outlined more ways to reach or use it. Sustained daily use would show whether people find enough value to return after the launch push. For now, the figures establish a strong opening, not which part of Meta’s campaign produced it or how durable it will be.
