Story brief
3 key pointsMidjourney is moving V8.2 image editing from a model test into a more cohesive Alpha workflow. The September 3 update makes the lightbox the place to prompt edits, add up to four reference images, and review outputs from a session. The release expands practical editing with inpainting and outpainting, but several controls remain provisional: moodboards and style references may need extra prompt guidance, Change Style is experimental, and persistence/default settings are still undecided.

Midjourney has turned Alpha’s image lightbox into a place to make and review edits. Its integrated editor accepts plain-language instructions and as many as four reference images, while keeping all edits from a session together in the same view.
The image view becomes the editing surface
The September 3 Alpha update deployed Midjourney’s V8.2 edit model to alpha.midjourney.com and built its new editor directly into the lightbox. A user can open an image there, describe a requested change, add reference material, and inspect the resulting session edits without leaving that view.
The placement is a follow-on to Midjourney’s August 27 opening of broader V8.2 testing. That initial release introduced editing from written instructions, image generation with up to four references, inpainting for changing specific areas, and outpainting for extending an image’s canvas.
Controls beyond the editor are still being tuned
The model supports personalization, moodboards, and style references. Midjourney says moodboards and style references can require extra prompt direction in this version, a limitation for users expecting those inputs to work without further instruction.
--edit url...Alpha is also experimenting with Change Style in the lightbox for exploring style variations. Midjourney describes it as an early version of a broader effort to make style exploration easier, so it remains a test rather than a settled control.
The next interface decisions
The release also includes drag-and-drop and prompt-bar work, performance improvements, clearer error messaging, and bug fixes. One material interaction question remains open: Midjourney is still deciding what settings should persist between prompts and sessions, and how users will set defaults.
The company says its next Alpha work includes default parameters, previews of a style reference with a prompt, larger image displays, and clearer settings controls. Midjourney characterizes Alpha as a rapidly changing testing environment and says some features may be broken as updates continue.
