NBC Poll: Only 11% More Likely to Back Candidates Supporting Local Data Centers

Backing an AI data center may offer candidates little electoral upside, even if the issue ranks below rising prices for voters overall. In new NBC News polling, only 11% of respondents said they would be more likely to vote for a candidate who supported local data-center construction. NBC News said accusing an opponent of backing such projects had become a potent campaign attack.

Local opposition set the stage

The campaign finding follows earlier NBC News Decision Desk polling on what voters think about an AI data center in their own community. Sixty-nine percent of respondents opposed local construction, and 45% said they strongly opposed it. The result is about where facilities are built, not a general view of AI policy.

NBC News has identified the spread of data centers as a policy flash point for neighboring communities and an issue in key midterm races. Dawn Vogel, a Republican county supervisor in Buchanan County, Iowa, said the facilities are spreading across the country too quickly.

The new test is electoral

The latest result asks a different question: whether a candidate’s position could change a vote. Data centers were not a top concern for voters when compared with issues such as rising prices, NBC News found. But support for local construction did not register as a clear political advantage.

That creates an awkward choice for campaigns in places weighing new facilities. A project may not drive the national political conversation, yet it can give opponents a simple local line of attack. The polling does not settle how candidates should respond, but it suggests that treating nearby construction as a quiet infrastructure question carries political risk.
