OpenAI is letting ChatGPT Business workspaces spend more on just the people who use it hardest. Premium seats are now generally available at one hundred dollars per user per month with annual billing, or one hundred twenty-five dollars month to month. That compares with twenty-five dollars monthly, or twenty dollars annually, for a Standard seat. The important change is that teams can mix the two. A workspace owner can assign Premium to an intensive user, keep occasional users on Standard, and move those seats around as needs change. Premium includes five times the Standard usage and removes the five-hour usage limit, while both tiers include ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex. A Business workspace still needs at least two seats, so one Standard and one Premium seat is enough to qualify. But Premium is higher capacity, not unlimited access. Allowances still vary by model, task size, reasoning effort, and workload, and OpenAI does not translate them into a fixed number of prompts. Model and feature limits remain separate. Once included usage runs out, flexible pricing and workspace credits can apply; API usage is billed separately. There are also practical billing constraints: new seats activate immediately with prorated charges, reductions wait until renewal, and unassigned seats remain billable. Invoice terms, Zero Data Retention, and BAAs require a contracted offering. The key question now is whether Premium changes the particular limits a team is actually hitting.

Story brief

3 key points

OpenAI made ChatGPT Business Premium seats generally available on August 25, letting workspace owners add higher-capacity access only for members who need it. Premium costs $100 per user per month with annual billing or $125 monthly, versus $20/$25 for Standard, and provides five times the included usage without the Standard five-hour limit. It is not unlimited: model and feature allowances remain separate, API...

Usage varies by model, task size, reasoning effort, and workload; OpenAI does not provide a fixed prompt allowance.

ChatGPT Business teams can now buy higher-capacity seats for selected members rather than moving an entire workspace to a new plan. Premium seats cost $100 per user each month on annual billing, or $125 on monthly billing, and include five times the Standard seat’s usage with no five-hour usage limit.

The price tracks the capacity increase. Standard seats cost $20 per user per month when billed annually, or $25 monthly; Premium is five times those prices. Both tiers include ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex, but Premium carries higher included usage limits.

Capacity can move between people

Workspace owners can mix Standard and Premium seats, then assign or reassign them as needs change. The seat is paid workspace capacity, separate from the member using it. A Business workspace still needs at least two seats in total, and one Standard seat plus one Premium seat meets that requirement.

That structure separates occasional use from sustained use inside the same self-serve workspace. ChatGPT Business provides centralized billing, administrative controls and usage visibility, so a team can change capacity without creating a separate environment for its Premium users.

The upgrade does not lift every limit

Premium is a higher-usage tier, not unlimited access. Individual ChatGPT model allowances remain separate, and OpenAI says Premium does not increase limits for every model or feature. Both tiers can use flexible pricing and workspace credits after their included usage is exhausted.

Its practical value will therefore depend on the work a team is doing. OpenAI describes greater included usage for ChatGPT Work and Codex, but says consumption varies with the model selected, task size, reasoning effort and amount of work performed. It does not express those allowances as a fixed prompt count.

What Premium does not include

  • API usage remains separate from a Business subscription and is billed independently.
  • Organizations that need invoice billing, purchase orders, negotiated payment terms, Zero Data Retention or BAAs are directed to a contracted offering.
  • OpenAI says it will not train on data from a ChatGPT Business workspace.

Flexibility follows a billing commitment

Seats can be reassigned, but purchased capacity still carries a cost. New seats activate immediately with prorated charges. Reductions take effect at the next renewal, and unassigned purchased seats are still billed.

Premium became generally available August 25 after an August 10 announcement and waitlist. The key purchasing question is no longer simply whether to use Business, but which users need extra capacity—and whether the limits they encounter are among the ones Premium changes.
