OpenAI’s October 28, 2026 release notes add promotional API balances to eligible ChatGPT subscriptions, giving subscribers a way to fund app and agent development separately from ChatGPT use. Pro grants match the plan’s monthly dollar tier, while Business credits pool seat contributions and cap at $500 per monthly cycle—or $6,000 for annually prepaid workspaces. The offer is conditional: users must claim it, link one eligible subscription to one API organization, and spend credits before they expire; availability may change.
Business contributes $20 per Standard seat and $100 per Premium seat; OpenAI’s example of five Standard and three Premium seats yields $400.
The first grant is prorated for the time left in the current paid period, and the seven-day subscription-age requirement must be met before claiming.
ChatGPT and API accounts must use matching email addresses, and the claimant must own both the subscription or workspace and receiving API organization.
Eligible ChatGPT Pro and Business subscribers can now claim a separate budget for building apps and agents with OpenAI, with monthly API grants reaching $500. OpenAI introduced the benefit in its October 28, 2026 release notes. It funds calls through the company’s developer platform—not extra conversations in ChatGPT or a larger Codex allowance.
The API lets software use OpenAI’s services to power applications. The promotional balance covers paid usage billed to one linked API organization, including text responses, agents, realtime services, image generation and built-in tools with their applicable usage and storage charges. It does not cover Codex usage through API keys.
For Pro subscribers, the full-period grant matches the plan’s monthly dollar tier. Business works differently: each paid Standard seat contributes $20 and each Premium seat contributes $100 to a shared pool. That pool stops at $500 per monthly billing period, regardless of additional seat contributions.
OpenAI’s example combines five Standard seats and three Premium seats for a $400 allowance. Annually prepaid Business workspaces receive their full-year grant upfront, capped at $6,000 per annual billing cycle. The first grant is reduced to reflect the time remaining in the current paid period, so claiming midway through a cycle does not deliver the full advertised allowance.
The $100 Pro tier includes $100 in API credits per full monthly billing period.
The $200 Pro tier includes $200 in API credits per full monthly billing period.
The $500 Pro tier includes $500 in API credits per full monthly billing period.
Eligibility alone does not issue a grant. The paid subscription must have been active for at least seven days, and availability also depends on country and the account groups OpenAI has enabled. Plus and free-trial subscriptions do not qualify; Enterprise and Edu are not eligible plans under the offer.
Activation requires matching email addresses for the ChatGPT and API accounts. The person claiming must own both the eligible subscription or Business workspace and the receiving API organization, with permission to manage API billing. A Business admin role or workspace membership alone is insufficient. OpenAI’s activation guide provides two claim paths:
Choose that organization carefully. Each eligible subscription or workspace can link to only one API organization, and each organization can have only one active subscription link. Business teammates still need separate API organization and project access; their ChatGPT seats do not supply it.
After activation, grants renew automatically with an eligible subscription while the benefit remains available. Monthly credits expire at the end of the subscription billing cycle; annual Business grants expire at the annual cycle’s end. Unused credits do not roll over. OpenAI says the benefit may change or be removed.
No API payment method is needed to spend an active promotional grant. Free credits are used before purchased credits. Once the promotional balance runs out, requests draw on any purchased balance; if no credits remain, requests fail. Continuing then requires buying API credits or setting up Auto Recharge, whose thresholds and monthly purchase limit need separate review.
A positive balance does not override request-rate, token-rate, model, organization or project limits. ChatGPT and API billing remain separate. Scheduling a cancellation stops future grants when the subscription ends, but already issued credits remain usable until the current billing cycle closes.
