OpenAI is integrating ChatGPT Health with Epic, giving clinicians a route to pull patient-chart information into ChatGPT for review and questions. The product is designed to sit closer to clinical work without gaining the ability to edit the medical record.
Epic’s electronic health record system holds data for more than 325 million patients, according to OpenAI. The integration gives clinicians access in ChatGPT to appointment notes, lab results, medications, specialist documentation, and patient history—material that can otherwise be distributed across a chart.
A chart-side assistant, not a record editor
The stated workflow is synthesis rather than documentation. Clinicians can summarize records, inspect a patient’s history, identify changes, and prepare for future visits. In some deployments, OpenAI says they can run pre-visit reviews and build clinical timelines without leaving the patient chart.
That one-way connection is the key operating constraint. It limits ChatGPT’s role to reading and analysis rather than direct chart modification, while still placing its outputs in a workflow where a concise summary or missed change could shape a clinician’s next action.
The integration arrives with a wider healthcare toolkit
OpenAI is pairing the Epic connection with a Healthcare Public Data plugin and broader workspace access for organizations that have a Business Associate Agreement. The additions extend the offering beyond a single chart-review feature toward a set of tools for healthcare workers and organizations.
What the new pieces add
- The public-data plugin can retrieve material from ClinicalTrials.gov, CMS Coverage, RxNorm, DailyMed, and PubMed. OpenAI says it can support work on trial eligibility criteria, medication identifiers, coverage-policy versions, and provider records.
- Organizations with a Business Associate Agreement can use ChatGPT Work, Codex, apps, and connectors in their workspaces for compliant workflows.
- Health in ChatGPT already supported connections to medical records from U.S. hospital systems, One Medical, and Function Health, according to OpenAI’s July product launch.
More context raises the standard for safe use
OpenAI has said that connected medical-record information, and conversations that use it, are not used to train its foundation models or target ads. It also says users control when the consumer Health experience may use connected information, though the Epic announcement centers on clinician access rather than those consumer controls.
The remaining limitation is not merely access control. OpenAI said it gathered more than 4,300 physician responses across 27 clinical use cases and found 99.1% of responses safe. But the company has maintained that AI is not suitable for diagnosis or treatment, and even a small share of unsafe answers can carry serious consequences in clinical settings.
