3 key pointsOpenAI is restricting the $200 ChatGPT Pro tier to manage infrastructure pressure from unusually strong demand for its GPT-6 Astra model. Current $200 subscribers retain access, while new purchases and upgrades are paused indefinitely; lower-priced plans, including $100 Pro, Go, Plus, and API access remain available. The company characterized the action as targeted capacity control, not a withdrawal of GPT-6 Astra.
OpenAI has temporarily stopped new sign-ups and upgrades to its $200-a-month ChatGPT Pro plan after demand for GPT-6 Astra put pressure on its infrastructure. The restriction leaves existing $200 Pro subscribers in place while shutting the main entry point for the service tier OpenAI says strains its systems most.
The move is a capacity-control decision, not a broader withdrawal of Astra. OpenAI product leader Thibault Sottiaux said the company chose the smallest step it believed would preserve the broadest access. It is limiting the intake of customers on the Pro tier rather than closing lower-priced plans or API access.
Why the $200 plan became the pressure point
A subscription plan sells continuing access for a fixed monthly price. When a newly released model draws unusually heavy use, the operator has to keep enough computing capacity available for the people already using it. Sottiaux said the $200 Pro plan places the greatest strain on OpenAI’s systems, making it the narrowest place to reduce incoming demand.
The company has not disclosed how many people were attempting to join Pro each day, or when it expects to reopen the tier. That leaves the scale and duration of the constraint unclear. But OpenAI had already described Astra demand as unprecedented when it warned that a pause might be necessary.
Who can still use which plans
- Existing $200 Pro subscriptions are not affected by the pause.
- New and existing $100 Pro subscriptions are also unaffected.
- Go, Plus and API access remain available.
- New $200 Pro sign-ups and upgrades from Free, Go, Plus or $100 Pro are paused.
There is an important consequence for current $200 Pro customers who consider leaving. OpenAI says a subscriber who cancels or schedules a downgrade keeps the plan through the current billing cycle and can reverse the change before that cycle ends. Once the subscription ends, however, the customer cannot buy the plan again until the pause is lifted.
Broad access, but not identical access
Keeping Go, Plus and API access available preserves several routes to OpenAI’s products while the company absorbs demand. Yet the pause draws a sharp line between access that existing premium customers already hold and access prospective customers can newly purchase. The immediate business tradeoff is clear: OpenAI is accepting foregone $200 subscriptions to prioritize service quality for users already inside the plan.
For people outside Pro, the unanswered question is not whether the product is paused, but how long the gate will remain closed. OpenAI has given no timetable. Until it does, the $200 tier is available to its current subscribers but temporarily unavailable as a new purchase.
