OpenAI Brings Shared Documents Into ChatGPT With Its New Space Workspace
Pages support real-time editing, and meeting summaries can feed into the workspace. Mobile editing and automatic page updates are unavailable at launch, while shared content follows each collaborator’s AI settings.
Teams can turn conversations, files, or templates into editable pages, organize them into spaces, and co-edit with passage-level comments and page chat. OpenAI launched Space at Dev Day on September 29, 2026, for Pro, Business, and Enterprise users; it replaces Library for eligible accounts, while Projects remain separate. The launch is narrower than the broader office-suite pitch: self-updating pages are unavailable, and Slides and Sheets are still forthcoming. Shared-page permissions and collaborators’ data settings also shape what information is exposed and whether contributions may be eligible for training.

Page editing is available on the web and desktop; mobile users can find, read, and share pages but cannot edit them.
02
Uploaded files follow page permissions, but links to external files do not grant access to originals; copied or summarized content is visible to page viewers.

Removing a direct invitation does not revoke access inherited from a parent page or space, and moving a page can change its audience.
OpenAIlaunched ChatGPT Space on September 29, 2026, giving coworkers a place inside ChatGPT to organize files and edit shared documents with AI assistance. Introduced at Dev Day in San Francisco, the workspace is available to Pro, Business and Enterprise users. Each collaborator uses their own ChatGPT—an arrangement that keeps private chats separate but makes individual data settings consequential for shared work.
From a conversation to a working document
The basic unit is a page: an editable document for a project brief, research summary, meeting notes or team update. A space groups related pages, files and folders. Pages can also contain subpages, keeping an overview and its supporting material together rather than spreading them across separate conversations.
Users can ask ChatGPT to turn a conversation into a page, start writing directly in Space or choose a template. They can then edit the text themselves or request changes to an entire document or a particular section. OpenAI’s getting-started guide describes adding charts, trackers and interactive tools, as well as comparing proposals or incorporating attached meeting notes.
People with edit access can make changes together in real time. Comments attach feedback to specific passages, while the page’s chat handles broader questions and revisions. OpenAI tells users to check names, dates, calculations and sources before using or sharing the result. AI assistance does not remove that review step.
Access now, automation later
Space replaces Library for accounts with access, but it does not replace Projects. Projects remain the separate home for project chats, files and instructions. The launch also has several practical limits:
Page creation and editing work on the web and in the ChatGPT desktop app. Mobile supports finding, reading and sharing pages, but not editing.
Organization sharing settings govern collaboration in managed workspaces. Enterprise administrators may need to enable sharing first.
Automatic page updates through Keep updated are not available at launch.
That last limit distinguishes the launch from the more automated workflow CEO Sam Altman described onstage. He said a page could receive instructions to check a team channel and update itself, according to TechCrunch. OpenAI’s documentation says automatic updates are unavailable at launch, so that example should not be treated as a current capability.
Meeting notes feed in; slides are pending
A related meeting plugin can capture notes, generate summaries and action items, and add them to a Space, Engadget reports. It deletes captured audio after generating the notes. Initial availability is slated for the macOS desktop app on Pro and Business plans, with Enterprise access to follow.

Slides have a less immediate timetable. Although TechCrunch described collaborative slides as launched, OpenAI’s documentation lists Slides and Sheets as coming soon. Engadget puts collaborative slides in the coming weeks and says they will support export to PowerPoint and Google Slides. The announcement therefore does not mean every part of the proposed document workflow is available today.
A shared page can expose more than its source file
File access depends on how material enters a page. Uploaded files follow the page’s permissions. Links to separately stored files—including files in connected services—do not grant access to the originals. But information copied or summarized onto a shared page becomes readable to its viewers, even when those viewers cannot open the source.
Permissions can also come from a parent page or the surrounding space. Removing a direct invitation does not revoke inherited access; users must change the parent or space settings that grant it. Moving a page can change its audience through a new parent. Deleting a parent moves its subpages to Trash, including subpages owned by other people.
Private chats stay separate, but written context travels
Sharing a page does not give colleagues access to private chats or ChatGPT Memory, its saved personal context. However, if Memory helps ChatGPT write something onto the page, that information is visible to anyone who can view it. The boundary protects the private source, not information carried into the shared document.
A collaborator with Memory enabled may also have their ChatGPT remember information from a shared page even when your own Memory is off. OpenAI’s data controls distinguish that behavior from training: it says it does not train on Business or Enterprise data by default. Page permissions, remembered context and training preferences are separate controls—not one universal privacy switch.
