Partner organizations will nominate staff for training and an assessment before they lead workshops. The pilot builds on an existing network of community partners.

The pilot shifts some Academy instruction to trained staff at partner organizations, with a required curriculum and facilitation assessment before they can lead sessions. That could extend hands-on AI training through schools, workforce groups, small-business networks, and community organizations without requiring OpenAI to host every workshop itself.
The Academy has held more than 250 events since launching in September 2024.
One AI Skills Jam drew over 1,600 educators and school leaders across eight U.S. cities.
The program requires trainers to complete training and pass a facilitation assessment before leading sessions.
OpenAI is piloting a way for partner organizations to lead more AI workshops in their communities. Its Community Trainer Program will prepare nominated staff to teach Academy material and guide hands-on sessions. In the same second-anniversary update, the company said more than 4 million people have engaged with Academy content.
Partners have already helped bring people to Academy programs and shape them around local needs. The pilot gives participating organizations a more direct teaching role: they nominate staff to learn the curriculum and how to run a workshop. That includes demonstrating useful workflows, helping people apply AI to their own tasks, encouraging peer learning, and supporting participants as they evaluate results.
Prospective trainers must complete training and a facilitation assessment before leading Academy sessions. OpenAI says the pilot should let partners offer more workshops and build their own ability to teach AI skills. It identifies schools, workforce organizations, small-business networks, and community groups as the kinds of partners that could take part.
OpenAI says the Academy has hosted more than 250 events since its September 2024 launch.
OpenAI says one AI Skills Jam brought together more than 1,600 teachers, administrators, and district leaders across eight U.S. cities.
The Academy began in September 2024 with an initial focus on developers and organizations working on local problems. It now offers self-paced courses, practical guides, in-person workshops, and larger events called AI Skills Jams.
The engagement figure is not a count of people who passed an assessment or demonstrated that they could use AI effectively afterward. OpenAI’s case for workshops rests on a more hands-on experience: it says participants benefit from time to try tools on their own work, compare approaches with peers, and get coaching. The trainer pilot aims to bring that format closer to where participants live and work.
The trainer pilot follows learning paths OpenAI introduced earlier this month for knowledge workers, developers, leaders, educators, and college students. Learners can choose courses tied to their roles and earn badges by passing assessments. Those paths organize what people can study; the pilot concerns who can guide them through using AI on work they recognize.
OpenAI gives examples of the tasks its training addresses: a teacher adapting a lesson with ChatGPT, a small-business owner setting up a repeatable customer-research process, or a developer using Codex to plan a software change while keeping control of the review. Its longer-term goal is for people to have someone nearby to consult as their needs and the tools change. Whether the pilot can provide that continuing support remains to be seen.
