OpenAI has reportedly acquired Glass Imaging, a startup that uses neural networks to improve smartphone photos as they are taken. The Wall Street Journal put the deal’s value at more than $300 million, bringing specialized camera talent into OpenAI’s reported consumer-hardware effort.
The acquisition remains unconfirmed by OpenAI. The company did not immediately respond to TechCrunch’s request for comment. Glass Imaging, founded in 2019 and based in Los Altos, California, had previously raised about $30 million from investors.
Glass Imaging’s work differs from using AI to modify a completed image. Its neural networks learn the characteristics of individual smartphone camera systems, with the aim of producing better images from the moment the shutter is pressed. The approach is built around the hardware that captured the image, not a one-size-fits-all effect applied afterward.

OpenAI is rumored to be working on hardware including smartphones, earbuds and AI companion devices. TechCrunch also reported that Sam Altman and Jony Ive disclosed their work on device startup io in 2025, when OpenAI bought Ive’s company. The Glass Imaging report names no OpenAI product that would use the startup’s technology.
For now, the acquisition is a reported purchase of a company built around camera capture, not a disclosure of how OpenAI will deploy it. Whether that expertise becomes part of a future device remains the central unanswered question.
